Problem creating a disk image from a folder

I am having a problem creating a disk image from a particular folder.

Every time I try I get an error message"

"Unable to create 'folder name' Operation not supported.

I can create disk images from other folders OK

When I looked in the console file there was the following messages:

There seems to be a problem with the file 000_Theatre.theme

When I use Finder try to copy this file to the same volume the disk image was being created on it copies OK.

I also checked the permissions of the file and they appear OK.

Any help with this appreciated. The volume this file is on is dying, Disk Utilities reports Volume is faulty and cannot be repaired.

Seems to indicate eiither Disc corruption or maybe trying to create the dmg in the wrong place.

Could be many things, we should start with this...

"Try Disk Utility

1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.

2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)

*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*

3. Click the First Aid tab.

4. Select your Mac OS X volume.

5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."

Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.

(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)

If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.

About 2 week ago I tried Disk Repair from the Install Disk and had the result

" disk can not be repaired". I was in the process of copying a much data as possible before erasing the volume when I ran into the problem above.

Tried the procedure you have suggested yesterday and Disk Repair ran successfully.

So did Repair disk permissions however there were around 1400 permissions that needed repair and about 50 had the message "......would not be repaired"

Given that I had two different results from Disk Repair I ran it again a couple of times. Both times it ran successfully. I also ran the repair permissions two more times. It appears the permissions are not actually being repaired because each time I ran "Repair disk permissions" I got a very similar list of permission errors. I have not compared exactly but similar length of list.

I also tried using Finder to copy the folder I am having problems with to another volume and then to make a disk image from the copy. The first time it copied OK but would not create a disk image. The second time creating the disk image was successful.

It seems like there is something wrong with the disk. I am not sure if erasing it will be enough or would it be better to completely replace it?

You can ignore the repeated ones on a 2nd Permission Repair, it's just the way Permission Trpair works, or doesn't depending on you you view things, but they should br OK after the 1st run.

Are things working OK now?

The original problem is still there. When I try to create a disk image of the library folder of the user "Entertainment" I still get an error. I have found two ways to work around this:

1) By using finder to copy files to another volume and then creating an image from that volume.

2) Creating a blank disk image and then using Finder to copy the folder into this blank image.

The original underlying problem, that Disk Utility reported the volume unrepairable has gone away.

I am worried about the very large number of permission errors and whether all the above is a symptom that the disk is dying and should be replaced.

No, that's not it.

I don't know if the Disk is failing or not, nor how close it might be to faailing, but that doesn't sound like the problem either.

Found this article in support " Mac OS X: Disk Utility's Repair Disk Permissions messages that you can safely ignore" http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1448. Most of the messages I am getting are like the ones listed in the support article. So I am not so worried about this now.

Any suggestions as to what to do next to identify what is causing the problem
