Q: To an Apple TV the only device that I can use airplay on? It will not work with my Samsung TV?

Is a Apple TV the only type device that I can use AirPlay on? It will not work on my Samsung HDTV?

For the samsung TV you can use Apple TV or get the iPad Digital AV Adapter and an HDMI cable.

There are alternative apps available for different devices Check the Samsung support site to see if they have any listings.

It is up to the device manufacturer whether they will include support for airplay. I have a sony receiver that supports airplay.
