I have a passcode to unlock my ipad 2 but it is not 4 digits I cannot update

I have a passcode to get into my ipad 2 but it is not 4 digits so when I go to updates it wants a 4 digit passcode that I never had.

iPad 2, iOS 7.1.1

The iOS 7.1.1 update requests your four digit passcode. That is the code you enter when you first turn on your iPad or you waken it from sleep after an Autolock. If you don't know or can't remember your passcode you will have to restore your device. Here's an Apple support site that explains this.

If you at some time in the past turned off "Simple Passcode" in the Settings app the update should allow you to enter more characters.
