Check your user folder/Music/iTunes/iTunes Media to see if the songs are there. If you find them, in iTunes/File/Add to Library.
I'm sorry but I'm not sure how to get to the path you're describing - do you mean open itunes to find music/itunes/itunes media? First time mac owner - all very confusing. Should probably phone support for a tutorial!
Welcome to the world of Mac. I've got a bunch of links to Mac 'how to' articles if you are interested.
In Finder/View make sure Show Sidebar is selected. Your user folder usually looks like a house and probably has your account name on it. If you select it, there is a folder named Music there. If you select it, normally that is where your iTunes folder should be. In that folder, there should be an iTunes Media folder that contains your songs. If the song files are there go to iTunes.
Open iTunes. Under the iTunes menu, select Preferences and go to the Advanced tab. The arrow points to where your user/music/iTunes should be listed. You can click the change button and navigate to you user folder/Music/iTunes to load your music.
