Arrived in China yesterday. Common web sites that I view back in USA fail to open over here in China because Safari cannot connect to the server. Not all web sites are affected as the situation seems random. Is there an international setting that I should make adjustments for?

Go step by step and test.
1. Power Cycle
Power off the router. Unplug it from the wall. Wait a while.
Plug it back to the wall. Power the router on. Wait until all the lights are lit properly.
It will take a while.
Restart the computer.
2. Start up in Safe Mode.

3. Turn off Extensions, if any.
Safari > Preferences > Extensions
4. Turn off proxies, if selected.
System Preference > Network > Advanced > Proxies Tab
Under "Select Protocol", uncheck any box if selected.
Click "OK" then "Apply"
5. Uninstall anti-virus software if any.
China censors the internet. There are many sites that are blocked by the Chinese government when you're on a Chinese network. See:

One way you could get around this, if you really need to access a blocked site while you are there, would be to use a VPN (virtual private network) from another country. This would encrypt your network traffic, as well as allowing you to send all transactions through a server that isn't blocked. See:
