Q: iOS 7.1.1 update causing wifi problems

Since I've update my ipad 3 to iOS 7.1.1 my home wifi network keeping dropping out. I've rebooted, and reset network settings, but the issue persists. This only began after the update, so I'm guessing this is an issue with the 7.1.1 update

Same problem with iPhone 5 since updating to iOS 7.1.1.

    So far I have tried:

    1) resetting network setting

    2) restoring to factory settings to a new as well as to a backed-up setting

    3) restarting wifi router.

    4) using different wifi networks

What baffles me about this wifi problem is that despite pretty consistent and in apparantly unchanged signal strength, the actual measured speed/performance of the wifi has dropped significantly.

In order to ascertain what exactly is going on with the wifi, I ran a speed test on the wifi from different locations throughout my office. Near the router it still seems to work as well as before. Step a few feet away from the router and the wifi's speed seems to drop rapidly despite fairly consistent signal strenght (3 bars throughout). In actual numbers, my work's wifi used to have download speeds at about 11 to 13 kbps with a(n expected) neglible to moderate drop throughout the space away from the router. In earlier tests I had logged similar speeds throughout various locations in the office.

Presumably since the update to iOS 7.1.1, I am still able to measure 11 to 13 kbps in close proximity to the router, whereas about 25ft away (without any significant obstructions that may shield my reception), the wifi speeds drop to 0.5 to 1.0 kbps.

Surprisingly, my room mate who owns the same model iPhone and runs the same iOS version does not seem to experience these issues.

A visit to the apple store and a preliminary diagnostic test there only revealed that the wifi antenna itself seems to be fully operational.

Mine only seems to affect the download, which unfortunately is the most important.

Im having the exact same problem with wifi. I have a iphone 5. also my battery is being destroyed i drop like 10% in an hour of not using the phone. What the **** is going on with these software updatse do they not test these things before they release? them i paid over $500 for the hardware and then they ruin it with their software. This seems to be the norm these day companys releasing software that seems to be untested it may not affect everyone but its the look of the draw if it affects you its like they are chancing their arm. Oh and to all those that are resetting their own networks and the like, its not your network its the NEW UPDATE so dont go resetting anything but the phone or ipad. its not YOUR FAULT its APPLES FAULTY SOFTWARE.

My wife and I both have the IPhone 5 and we also have the New Ipad. We just switched internet companies from ATT to Comcast. We updated both of our phones to 7.1.1 but have not updated the IPAD yet. We were able to connect to the comcast router for 1 day and both of our phones dropped off the wifi but our IPaD is still online. Would it be software with the IPHONE or firmware with the cable company?

Resetting network settings and resetting password did not help.

Have found some relief by disabling wi-fi OBSS Coexistence within router advanced settings.

Shame I can't change this on networks I don't own and was fine before the patch.

I've been troubleshooting a wifi network comprising four Aruba 105 Wireless Access Points because devices upgraded to iOS 7.1.1 no longer worked satisfactorily - giving symptoms of weak signal and dropping connections.

This network transmitted the SSID in both 2.4GHz and 5GHz baands. Nothing else we tried had any beneficial eggect but turning off the 5GHz radios seems to have fixed the problem. I'll try it on 5GHz alone in a couple of days. Does going from dual-band transmission to single band fix it for anyone else?

I have EXACTLY the same problem with my iPhone 5 since updating to iOS 7.1.1.

My wireless connection that was fine before the update now does not connect or connects only fir a minute or two.

My battery drains as I watch it!

    It is very frustrating.

    iPad wireless connection works fine.

Business iPhone 5C has no issues with iOS 7.1.1

    Help!

I have the same problem where my iPhone 4S will no longer recognize any available networks, both at home and at work.  I have attempted just about every option provided on these forums since I've downloaded iOS 7.1.1, including (but not limited to): rebooting my phone, rebotting the router, resetting network setting, etc.  I am just short of performing a dance to plead with the technology gods to restore my faith in Apple.  This is absurd that I am unable to log onto a WiFi network.

Apple products have been disgracefully lowered in quality over the last year to two years.  I have been a loyal Apple customer for over a decade but I expect Apple employees to care about the QUALITY of service its customers expect.

Come on, Apple, test your software updates before they are made available to customers and uphold the ethics that Steve Jobs held to himself while he was a part of the company.

Me again.  I now know several people I work with have this same issue on either iPads or iPhones.

Yesterday, I rang the Apple Support desk and logged my issues (battery life very bad and wireless connection very bad after iOS 7.1.1 upgrade).  The Support person was great. He suggested the issue was because I upgraded over a wireless connection, and some of the files had becaome corrupt.  He sent an email with a button that sent a diagnostic test back to him immediately (very impressive).  After analysis (only 1 minute), he ssaid there was nothing wrong with my battery.  Then, he suggested that I back up my iPhone with iTunes and restore with iTunes.  I was excited.  So, last night, another Apple Support person talked me through the steps.  Back-up/restore completed.  Unfortunately, the problems remained.  No improvement.

Today I rang the Apple Support to let them know their recommended steps resulted in no improvement. The Support person suggested I take the iPhone to an Apple Support store (but there are none in New Zealand, where I live).  Then she suggested I take it into a "repair shop".  I'm not doing that.  I do not believe there is an issue with by phone.

My colleagues and I are very annoyed that Apple hasn't just come out and said they have had a problem with this upgrade.  It is causing unnecessary stress (one poor girl's husband told her off for "doing something to the router") and I am sure that some users have most likely spent money attempting to fix these issues not realising the issue does not lie with their own Apple device or router and so on.

I work in a software development company so I know things don't always go to plan.... but come on Apple!  Really?!!!!  The upgarde has been out for 4 weeks now.  APPLE, PLEASE FIX THIS!

I refurbish iphone 4 and iPhone 4s.  I have recently updated three phones I purchased for resale that have resulted in wifi issues 2 iPhone 4s and 1 iphone 4.

I ran into this issue on a previous phone with a previous update.  This new update causes the phone to run hot.  From what I can tell it affects the wifi chip to the point where the solder is compromised thus loosening the connections and causing them to fail.

It then becomes a hardware issue which can only be fixed by replacing the chip.  Ridiculous flaw not to mention expensive.  I can't see any other way around this.

I have been told that if you need to do this update to turn off the background refresh app before doing so.  If you don't need it,  don't do it.  It's not really designed for anything but the newest iPhone 5s.  This seems to be a chronic issue with iphone 4 and 4s.  A new update will not help as it affects the motherboard once it has been applied.  Ultimately there is nothing wrong with the update.  It works great on my personal phone, which is an iPhone 4s 64 gb.   My experience is there are issues in the 16 gb which is the most popular model.  It's a hardware issue with some select apple devices.  It's just impossible to know which ones.   They are mass produced,  some are good some bad.

I did put it in the fridge for an hour and it actually worked for 10 minutes until it got hot again.  I tried it again and the next time nothing.  This tells me something is going on with the chip and it's overheating.

Sorry for the bad news.  I have three very expensive paperweights on my desk right now.   Which is really frustrating.   This along with the new law that carriers can blacklist a phone for an unpaid bill will kill the resale business.  Buyer beware for sure.
