My airport express keeps showing an error and says "device not found". I am trying to make a wi-fi network stronger but my airport utility keeps saying device not found.
I would like to know what should i do to make my Airport express work and make the old wi-fi network stronger in my house.

What device is providing the current, existing wireless network in your house?
If this is an Apple router, which model might it be?
Are you planning to have the AirPort Express connect to your main router using a wired, Ethernet cable connection?.......or......do you want to the Express to connect to your current network wirelessly?

Here, I believe that you are referring to AirPort Utility. Please tell us what version of AirPort Utility that you are using.
The device that provide the wi-fi is a regular modem, (non apple) and I am trying to have the Express connect to the current network wirelessly, the current network is far so I want the Express to be in half way of it.
The airport utility version is 6.3.2

Unfortunately, Apple's "extend a wireless network" feature is a proprietary function that will only work with other Apple routers.
The AirPort Express will not be able to connect to a 3rd party modem/wireless router and "extend" the signal wirelessly.
If the AirPort Express can connect to the modem/router using a permanent, wired Ethernet cable connection, then it can be configured to provide more wireless signal coverage that way.

How long is the range for the Express if I connected to the router that is in the basement?

As I said above.....

The AirPort Express will have approximately the same range as your current modem/router.
You will need to run a long Ethernet cable from your modem/router to the area where you need more wireless signal and connect the AirPort Express at that location.
An Ethernet cable can be run up to 330 feet, or about 100 meters with virtually no signal loss, so unless you have a very, very large home, you should be able to locate the Express exactly where it will be needed.
