Q: Final Cut express or iDVD quality issue

First time doin gany editing or filming at all.

Filmed using a Canon 5D Mk3 all shot in highest quality

imported to FCE in the full 1920 at 25fps  apple intermediate codec

edited and the exported with the first Quick time opttion.  Not self contained.

video off  the camera played directly on the computer, nice and sharp

yet after is is out of FCE ...well it is crap..jagged edges , blurry without sharepening ..jsut aweful.

I am interspercing it with video shot on a little sony el cheapo handy cam..that was edited in iMovie ...that is almost broadcast quaility in comaprision..crisp and sharp after comint through FCE and on to the iDVD image file.

So what is FCE (or iDVD) doing to the initilly far superior footage from the Canon 5D .  I mean, the 5D is a camera that costs 10 times the price of the little handy cam, yet its output with iMovie is far superior...

What the **** am I doing wrong..i have to assume it is me...What info do I need to supply to you guys in order for you to help me solve this

I have just spend weeks editing all this footage (30 hours plus) and it is ...well utter ****...so p'd off it is unbelievable.  the thought of changin it all and editing it all again...well that is nto an option..

any advise appreciated.

Neil

    Hi Al

What do you know of this converter?

    http://brorsoft.com/video-converter-mac/

They claim it will do what is needed.

I have sent an e-mail to Steph at squared 5 to see if MPEG Streamclip can or can not convert correctly for FCE import but not had a reply yet.

    Thanks

Because the footage is originally progressive it looks like it stayed that way.

Streamclip settings are to De-interlace which is the opposite of what you wanted.

You will find that FCP X will handle this footage OK as it loves Progressive and is designed to handle it.

You can download a 30 day trial version.

OK, so Streamclip....Is there no way to get it to create interlaced 1080?  or do you know of any app that does this.

I treid the borosoft converter I linked to earlier and it has a specific FCE output setting...but the output does nto appear to be any better than from Streamclip.

How can one identify from Ge4t Info or other file data wether any particular .mov file is interlaced or progressive?  I do nto see a column for that in FCE broweser columns

This might be useful to determine if my converted video is 1080i or 1080p

It displays scan type, amongst many other things

Well I really do not knwo what to think now

I bought that little Media Info app and examined the MPEG Stream Clip output files.

It seems that the check box on the RHS the says "Deslect for Progressive Movies" , next to the "Interlaced Scaling " Box  means deselect if you want to OUTPUT progressive movies...rather than as I was reading it...Deselect if your input movies are Progressive.

I assumed that if you selected 1920 x 1080 (HDTV1080i) in the "Frame Size " radio buttons,   that that is what you would get...1080i    but No you can get 1080p even with 1080i selected if you leave the "Deslect for Progressive Movies" ,/"Interlaced Scaling " Box un checked.

Have now treid re transcoding in to a true 1080i AIC  .mov file  and Media Info confimrs the new file is Interlaced...but rather than it appearing better in FCE..it appears if anything worse...

But either way, the difference is minimal, the difference in quality between the footage shot with the expensive Canon 5D MkIII, is still way inferior to the footage shot with the Panasonic Handy cam.

So still have not idea where the image degredation is coming form ..or came from when the Canon footage was first shot.

    back to square one.
