To receive iMessages on your iPad you need to go to the Settings for Messages and add the same Apple ID there that you use with your iPhone.
1. Messages on the iPad can only be sent to other iDevices
2. The receiving party must also be registered with iMessage
Note: The two above conditions must be met.
It does seem very odd that having put a SIM into my iPad I can't send or recieve SMS with it. Android devices do this perfectly well. It is particulary annoying since the only 3G supplier where I live that can be relied upon, '3' only sends out passwords by SMS!
iPads CANNOT send and receive SMS messages. SMS messages are on phones only (unless you are using a 3rd party app). Even if you put your phone's sim card in the iPad, it will NOT send SMS messages. Sorry.
That's a design decision, though, not a law of physics. My Sony tablet handles SMS messages perfectly well. I imagine Apple are keen to encourage their own iMessage product.
No reason why they shouldn't. The design decision is theirs to make. But it is just as pig-headed a decision in the vendor's interest not the consumer, as is 3's pig-headed insistence on /using/ SMS. When mega-corps collide the user gets trampled.

Useful! but none of them help with my issue -the messages from my provider come to the phone number of the SIM, not t o some arbitrary extra number.
I had this problem for months and finally figured it out. Contrary to what many have posted here, you can send and receive SMS messages from your iPad (or Mac) using the Messages app. I've done it before but it stopped working at some point. It probably got turned off by some update.
What you basically need to do is go to Settings on your iPhone then —> Messages ——> Texr Message Forwarding and turn on your device. You can get a detailed description here: http://www.ianswerguy.com/sms-text-messages-on-an-ipad/

You're replying to a post that's almost two years old. At the time this thread was last active, it was NOT possible to send SMS to or from an iPad. The posters were quite correct. It's always important to pay attention to the dates on threads.
