7.1.1 update wiping iphone clean

I hesitated to update the os because the last time I did; my iphone was wiped cleaned and restored to factory condition (I did nothing). It just did it again on the 7.1.1 os update --- wiped clean and now "automatically" restoring to factory condition. It's restore appears to be running so slow that it may not be done for days, but once complete, I will then have to do a backup restore to gain access to my memory before the os update began. Can't figure out why this is happening, but twice burned....I am done with any more Apple os updates!!!!!

iPhone 4S, iOS 7.1.1, os update through itunes.

Before you do any software update, you should sync your iPhone and back it up to your computer using iTunes, and to iCloud using either your computer or your device itself. If you do that, then the new software update sets itself up with the information from your last backup.

If you've never done a back up, then effectively your software update is a "clean install".

MNy recommendatipon would be to get in the habit of doing a back up every couple of weeks or so as a minimum. I've upgraded to 7.1.1 on both my iPhone and iPad today, and haven't lost anything at all.

Both backups were completed (cloud & computer) before the update was started. Once update started, it completed and gave the message that the ios update had been successfully installed. When I tried to use the phone, I received the icon to reattach the phone to the computer and when I did, I got the message that iphone is in recovery mode, will need to reinstall original software and when I select that "only" option, I was warned that this restore would return my iphone to factory settings. Apple is trying to improve on "bugs" and continues to add more "bugs" in the process!!!!

I also completed a backup/ transfer purchases from phone prior to completing the update. The update errored out and the phone could not be started withouth a restore. I now have reviewed my backups and there is nothing there prior to the update.I have run the last backup and it did nothing it is just the factory restore with all my apps reinstalled. None of the apps have any of my presets and all photos have been lost. Talking about ******* off a parent who has pictures of their child.

And I don't want to here the people who comment that I should have backed up first. I did!!!.

ryanrox111 -- I hear you! I had preset automatic backup to the icloud; but my previous bad experiences in losing all my contact, pictures, etc. like you got me to thinking that I had better backup to my computer before starting this 7.1.1 update and thank goodness that I did. After it wiped me clean and reset to the original factory settings, I was able to restore my computer backup; although I had to reset several setup's in my apps. Sorry to hear about your loss. I understand this doesn't happen to everyone, but it is happening and I resent people that think I'm doing something that is causing it. I only confirmed the update and after completed, my phone memory was wiped clean.
