You, actually, need to have at least 8 GB of space free to install Mavericks per the system requirements. The download, itsself is 5.3 GB. The additional space is needed for file swapping during the installation.
For optimal system performance, you should always strive to keep at least 15 GB or 10% of your hard drive capacity (whichever is greater) free. Sounds like you could use a larger drive.
