Freeing Up Space on The Hard Drive

      1. See Lion/Mountain Lion/Mavericks' Storage Display.

      2. You can remove data from your Home folder except for the /Home/Library/ folder.

      3. Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on freeing up space on your hard drive.

      4. Also see Freeing space on your Mac OS X startup disk.

      5. See Where did my Disk Space go?.

      6. See The Storage Display.

You must Empty the Trash in order to recover the space they occupied on the hard drive.

You should consider replacing the drive with a larger one. Check out OWC for drives, tutorials, and toolkits.

Try using OmniDiskSweeper 1.8 or GrandPerspective to search your drive for large files and where they are located.

Well there are a number of ways to achieve this. The first one I would recommend is to open the trash, make sure there is nothing in there that you need, and then empty it. The second thing would be photos and videos, I would put any old or 'unimportant' pics and vids on an external drive or burn to a cd, and then delete the photos and/or videos that I knew I wasn't going to look at all the time. The third would be music. I would back up the music I didn't listen to all the time and then delete them from my itunes library. The fourth thing would be apps. Any apps that I haven't used in a long time I would delete, also the plist files associated with those apps ( a good free program for this is 'app cleaner') So, basically you want to make backups of all of these and any other files and then delete them; then restart the machine.
