How to get iphone 5 out of recovery mode when restore will not work?

My iphone 5 went into recovery mode after attempting to update software to 7.1.1. I have tried to restore through iTunes and about 5 minutes into the restore it displays an error that iTunes is unable to update because the iphone is in recovery mode. 😕
