I have a Mid-2012 MacBook Pro and my exhaust fan is reading 0 rpm. What do I do? Is this normal? About three weeks ago I heard my fan sputter really loud and now there is a clinking sound inside and my computer gets extremely hot. Video playback and playing games like minecraft run very slow. My computer is no longer under the 1-year warrently (figures) and I'm not all gungho about spending large amounts of money to fix a small problem since I'm a college student, so listing prices or estimations of how much it would cost to fix/replace parts is appreciated.

MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2012), OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.3)

If you want a functioning MBP, you probably will have to spend some money, gung ho or not. Based on what you have stated it does sound that the fan is the issue and must be replaced.

I suggest that you take your MBP to an Apple store genius bar for a FREE evaluation. They should be able to confirm exactly what the problem is. They may quote you a price for a repair which you may accept or reject.

You may also perform an Internet search for parts and repair instructions. Two good places to look are iFixit.com and Powerbookmedic.com.

Fan replacements do not entirely deplete a bank account.

Ciao.
