Q: Beginner trying to export movie for project due tomorrow. HELP!

Finished editing a 20 minute film, it's due tomorrow for a school project. The shots already looked pretty low quality once I imported them in to FCE. After I export it, it lowers the quality even more. It looks A LOT worse. I shot the film on a camera that is native 1920x1080. I don't if that helps. I'm not very familiar with filming/editing jargon. I don't know what settings to use. Please help, I can answer any more questions if needed!

Did you edit your 1920 x 1080 footage into and FCE Sequence of matching properties?

PAL or NTSC, which video standard is in use?

FCE defualts to NTSC in SD quality so if you didn't setup the correct Easy Setup you may be getting this low quality.

You can check by selecting the Sequence icon in the Browser and right click>Item Properties to see the specs.

Do the same for a clip icon in the Browser and select Item Properties.

Both should be the same otherwise something needs adjusting to help with the quality stakes.

Export as a Quicktime movie for DVD authoring.

For USB something like QuickTime Compression MP4 is a place to start.

And it seems that it was set at NTSC (the sequence), is that right? Should it be Apple Intermediate Codec? What does that mean? And does this mean I will have to edit everything over again?

Wow, I think I did something right!!! First off I made a duplicate of my project just in case I screw something up while tinkering with the settings.

I went into the settings for the Sequence, and I changed it from NTSC to Apple Intermediate Codec 1440x1080p50i (something like that) and I rendered one of the scenes in the timeline and the quality is noticeably better. Now I have to render the rest of the movie but I think it may be the answer to my question!!

Go to the Easy Setups and select the one that exactly matches your clips , yes, they are NTSC.

Only newly created Sequences will take on the altered settings, you can't can't change an existing Sequence.

However, you can copy & paste the Timeline of the wrong Sequence to the newly created correct Sequence.

The screen shot supplied indicates you are putting the Clips into the wrong type of Sequence, HD into SD.

Any clips that go to this Sequence will be forced to become SD quality, not what you want.

Ok so I made a new sequence and changed it to HD, and then I copied the timeline from the wrong sequence and pasted in the new one. After I did this, the frame became smaller, I'm not sure exactly how to describe it, here's a picture:

Screen Shot 2014-04-28 at 12.32.40 AM.pngTo my knowledge, the only way to fix this would be to go through each and every frame, and resize using the wireframe thing, and after doing that, I would have to render each and every frame over again.??

Actually, i fixed it after choosing 100% instead of 39% where it says in the upper right hand corner. Is that right...?

100% should do or use Fit to Window.

One use for lower settings is when you want to see what's happening when making pictures move from off screen to on screen or visa versa.

OK For some odd reason when I viewed it in 100% it was totally fine, and then I exported it as a Quicktime movie and the frame is very very small. Screen Shot 2014-04-28 at 3.19.19 AM.pngthis is a picture of the clip in the quicktime player, the sides should be touching the sides of the screen shot but for some reason it's just small... I don't know what to do to fix it

And I spent like 40 minutes waiting for this thing to export

Alright, since it's 3:43 AM in the morning and this thing is due in a couple hours, I went through each and every frame in the sequence and adjusted it with the wire frame function. I'm hoping this will work... exporting it as a Quicktime movie right now.

Alright, long story short, the first export which I completed before I posted this thread wasn't as bad quality as I expected, I know because I ended up having to use it. It was a success, and despite the fact that I stayed up so early trying to make it higher quality, I learned A TON. Thank you Alchroma!! For some reason, when I exported the corrected sequence, the resulting file was 7 GB and would take 30-40 minutes to convert the file, and then it would never finish converting. So that's still a problem but I'm done with this project!!!!!!!!!! Yay.
