excessive wake ups reason for slow iMac?

My Mac started getting very slow at startup lately. Grey screen is on for 1min 30 sec, login screen is on for 36 secs, it takes 10 secs (sometimes longer) for dock to appear.

I'm using a 27 inch, mid March 2010 model, 2.8GB Intel Core i5, 8GB 1333 MHz DDR3, ATI Radeon HD 5750 1024 MB, OS X 10.9.2, have 851GB free of 1.83TB

I did a system status check and it came back with "excessive wakeups" messages.

I was wondering if this has to do with the slow start up.

I also did a SMC reset as explained in one of the posts. It brought down the time the login screen was on, but grey screen still there for 1min 30. I also have a lot of hangups (wheel shows).

What can I do?

iMac (27-inch Mid 2010), OS X Mavericks (10.9.2)

For a slow startup try troubleshooting login and startup items.

Open System Preferences > Users & Groups > Login Items

and go to /Library/StartupItems. Move any items you see in the StartupItems folder to the Trash.

Restart your Mac to test.

If that didn't help the startup time, might be a good time to check the startup disk.

Launch Disk Utility located in HD > Applications > Utillities

Select the startup disk on the left then select the First Aid tab.

Click: Verify Disk (not Verify Disk Permissions)

If DU reports errors, restart your Mac while holding down the Command + R keys. From there you should be able to access the built in utilities in OS X Recovery to repair the startup disk.

Make sure to back up all important files first before using OS X Recovery.

OS X Recovery does require a broadband high speed internet connection.

Where do I find the startup items to check as explained in second post:

I don't see the First Aid tab - it only gives me an option of restarting in target disk mode.

Please help.

Grey screen on now for 2.5 mins before startup.
