Battery drain issues since IOS 7.1.1 update

My battery has been horrible since the latest IOS update. I'm charging it 2to 3 times per day. Anyone else having issues?

So after a couple more days living with an out if the box reset installation I have descovered that I can't use any apps. Went for a walk on a remote beach in Ireland and had 35% battery. Pulled out phone to take a pano, and blam, died. Switched off with the hour glass and couldn't switch it back on. When I got back to a charger some 2 hours later I showed 36%. It's all over the place this phone now. It's completely inconsistent and dies regularly.

I'm with you! I thought "ouu, maybe this new update will help my phone and prevent it from going into stupid mode!" so so wrong. (Stupid Mode is what I call my cell's operating status when it blacks out, deletes my contact, prevents me from doing anything on my cell since it's frozen and thinking about what else it can do to aggravate me).

Since the last two updates (thanks IOS 7.1 and IOS 7.1.1) my iPhone only aggravates me like an accommodating child becoming a rebellious teen who's **** bent on making my life miserable. It sleeps all day, does nothing I need it to do, when it does open an app it closes it right away, drains the battery in 5 hours flat with no actitivity going on, drains the battery in 3 hours if it does have to do something (give me directions or relay text messages from other people), goes into iCloud and deletes bits of information from my contacts or the contact all together, and refuses to reset back to manufacturer's setting so I can have my good old phone back. 😟

It's like the phone is saying to me "oh, so you think you can just reset me back to the original format? take that! I'll just stay off and in stupid mode all day then. let's see how you like that."

so, the other day I did everything what was suggested in this article, http://www.overthought.org/blog/2014/the-ultimate-guide-to-solving-ios-battery-d rain except stop mail push. The battery still went down crazy fast, to 0% in about 14 hours. As the article also suggested, I let it drain completely before plugging it.

Then I plugged it in and went to sleep. When I woke up it was at 100% and STAYED THAT WAY all day! I also changed all my email to fetch, just to be sure. Otherwise I used it as normal, even using Strava (a major battery hog for tracking bicycle rides) 3 times that day and the battery was still strong. I had to fire up background app refresh in order to use Strava, but left that disabled for most apps.

Yes, I have a Mophie case, which I also had on all day. But still. Since 7.1.1, it's been as if I don't have a Mophie. I wondered if the Mophie wasn't working, but then discovered this thread. So that's what worked for me.

Add me to the list of iPhone 5 users having these same battery drain issues. I didn't have any issues with iOS 7.1, but my battery life is horrible with the 7.1.1 update. I didn't change anything else after the update. I used to be around 50% battery at the end of the day with 7.1, but now with 7.1.1 I have to charge it at the end of the day or the iPhone shuts off.

As an example, yesterday I was at 60% when I left work, and that was with little use. About an hour later, with no use, it was down to 40%. Then I used the Amazon app to order something and the battery dropped to 22%. I then went home and plugged it in, and the battery immediately jumped from 22% to 51%. If it was just the battery meter being off, that wouldn’t be a huge deal, but even if the battery is fuller than the phone thinks, the phone will still automatically turn off when it thinks it is low.

I just went to contact Apple to submit this issue. As part of that process, Apple emailed me a diagnostic tool to run on my iPhone. It said that it detected a Power issue, and took me to the next step of opening a case with Apple. From there, as part of my Apple Plus Service Care (or whatever that extra $99 warranty deal is called) they are going to replace the phone.

I find it extremely odd that I never saw this issue until iOS 7.1.1, but if you all haven't already, you might open a case with Apple and see if you get the same results from the diag tool they email to you.

I'm having the same issue iPad mini 7.1.1

I noticed that storage was also filling up without apparent reason, i had "8 GB" of "other".

I connected the iPad to the mac and fired up XCode to see what was happening, I saw a lot of error messages about a problem with an itunescloudd.

So i disabled iTunes Match, the errors were gone, the space was still filled with "8 GB" of "Other"

I have rebooted the iPad by keeping power and home until the screen blanked and turned to apple logo.

Battery drain is gone.

I think it's an iTunes Match / iTunes in the cloud problem.

The "Other" stuff could be error logs or other debugging junk, and now "Other" takes little to nothing on my iPad...

Is everyone with this issue using iTunes Match / In The Cloud?

Now, does this mean there is a problem with hardware or software? It's confusing. I contacted Apple also, and they did that diagnostic and it to threw up a Hardware/Battery issue. When I told the girl this started happening after the 7.1.1 update she did'nt know what to say to me....I don't think they know about this yet and the Service staff certainly don't know. Is there anywhere we can go and shout at the wall outside Apple Towers?, because they arent reading this thread anyway.

Apple, your engineers messed up. I can only rate iOS 7.1.1 to MS Vista. It's one of the worse updates. Many bugs with contact lists, email with cut and paste, and best of all battery life. I have helped many users of 4's change out batteries and the same condition exists. I have a 5 and must charge twice a day. When I had a 5 with iOS 6 I could go a day and a half on a charge. Same phone different software.

Now everything is shut down to just a dump phone and I am still getting bad battery life. Wish I could go back to iOS 6. If the new update does not fix these issues, it's time to switch to Samsung G 5. I dumped a computer with Vista and went to a Mac. I am ready to change a get a real smart phone again.

Steve Jobs must be rolling in his grave. So sorry Mr. Jobs.

Despite what http://appleinsider.com/articles/14/04/24/apples-ios-711-tweaks-shown-to-extend- iphone-battery-life

says, After doing the OTA update for both iPhone 4 and iPad mini (1g), I have no battery life to speak of. I unplugged my phone after charging overnight to 100% at about 730am, it is now 1045am and I am at 67%. Background apps are shutdown, wifi and bt are off, and I had already shut down the drains from original upgrade to iOS7.

I am leary to restore to factory then reinstall as I have limited bandwidth (living in South Africa at the moment and broadband is about $10 a gb on cellular and $2 a GB on dsl and that is slow as imaginable) and I just spent a few days downloading back issues of magazines for a long sailing trip I'm doing ina few months. This situation is as they say here, complete ***. Add this to the problem of my devices suddenly not playing iTunes purchases via home sharing has got me pretty p-o'd. I used to tell people Apple was great because things just worked... now I'm a liar...

EDIT: Trying the tips from here http://www.overthought.org/blog/2014/the-ultimate-guide-to-solving-ios-battery-d rain

to determine the drain. As it stands, I've got a usage time of 1:43 while standby is 3:32. I will see in a few minutes what the test has to say.

Don't know if this might help.

Me and my wife, both with iPhone 4S are experiencing this issue and something similar is happening with our iPad Retina 4th Gen and an iPad mini 1st Gen.

I have uninstalled facebook app from my 4S and iPad mini and battery life is back to normal.

Is it possible that the issue is facebook-app related?

How can i help in troubleshooting this aside my barbaric app removal?

May 24, 2014 7:58 AM in response to Dd4cowboyz

Just to add to the demographics here, I have an iPhone 4 (yes, you heard me). Starting immediately with the upgrade to 7.1.1 I've seen a drop of about 60% in battery lifetime. With my usage pattern, I've rarely used more than 50% in an average day, and now I need the Mophie to limp in bedtime while just barely avoiding the 20% warning.

I've also noticed something that may be more apparent on my older phone - I have serious performance issues, also co-eval with the upgrade. Apps run noticably slower, but that's always hard to quantify. The real problem is that app startup for anything that uses the 'net (everything uses the 'net) has gone from a fraction of a second to seconds. My phone has an older, more limited processor, so I'm most likely to notice changes in performance - your 5s might run slower, but at a very light percentage compared to mine.

DirtyVegas seems to assume he's the only one who understands iPhones, and his self-serving, narcissistic "guide" is simplistic, but has some good tips. Unfortunately, it's just common sense stuff that someone who knows a bit about remote devices would do no matter what. Yes, his tips are good policy. What he is too grumpy to think about is that the real answer is probably in the battery-bar suggestion.

The problem with 7.1.1 is pretty obvious, and not unusual. Something in the update is hammering the network connection. Whenever your phone uses net services there are all sorts of handshaking messages that have to go around, and when you're not, there are 'heartbeat' messages and push notifications to be handled. I'm going to guess that some unplanned twist of 7.1.1 has increased the amount of both.

Bad news - that means there is no solution except to wait until Apple issues an update. Don't wait for Apple to announce the problem or acknowledge it publicly - the fiscal quarter ends soon and any announcement of a problem now would have some measurable effect on stock price. I'm sure they know about it, I'm sure they're working on it, and I'm sure a later update will fix it - but at their own convenience. Look for an update that gives some relief some time in mid-June. In the meantime, try and hack out any app that uses push unless necessary. The problem probably happens if *any* app is using push, and you're not going to turn off messaging, are you?

Bleah.

May 25, 2014 5:23 PM in response to DHFrame

Da nada.

Update - after posting, I went through the settings and changed every single app that I could to use either manual or fetch updates. I turned off pretty much every single banner and badge. I kept email - I teach online and I need to know when students email me, and messages. That's it.

(I mean seriously. If I want to know if somebody like'd my last facebook post, I can push the dang button and check, right?)

Anyway, there is definitely a big change in speed and battery life. I don't know which app did it, or if it's just extra baggage talked on to every push channel, but push notifications are not your friend.

Best of luck,

dirkman
