Battery drain issues since IOS 7.1.1 update

My battery has been horrible since the latest IOS update. I'm charging it 2to 3 times per day. Anyone else having issues?

So, it's been approx. 24hr since I plugged in my phone and I still have 37% left. Hey Apple Software engineers... yeah, you broke my ****! Calendar and Contacts are the main culprits. Constantly feeding data to the servers. I am not on wifi often with my phone but I am certain that if I was, the same thing would be happening.

I'm writing to Craig Federighi now to direct him to the issue. Sure, I'm not likely the only one, but hey if it works it works. If not... welll, I tried right?

i have been with Apple support for the last 3 days and have been changing all settings, reset network settings and last resort was restore iphone 5s as new. Nothing seemed to work. Now the last thing they told me was to let the battery drain completely then recharge it without unplugging till it gets to 100%. It didn't work either. Am only getting approximately 6 hours of charge and have to keep on charging during the day. This is so so frustrating and Apple are refusing to admit that this something related to the software.

Nikita is right. Most iPhone users could get significantly more than 6-7 hours of battery usage. In my case, the difference was night and day once I started having the battery issue. It suddenly started draining 2-3 times faster than normal. On top of that, my phone was staying warm, even while "sleeping". Something was causing the phone to use power constantly.

Oh, I forgot to metion in my last post, the Apple Genuis at my last visit said that ios8 will have many more diagnostic features, for example, it will be able to show battery usage by app. Should be a helpful tool in case issue like this come up with the iPhone 6...

The did the diagnostic check online by sending an email i opened it from my phone and did a test which then they receive. They said battery seems to be working fine and they are almost certain that it is a software problem. But if that was the problem once i restored it as a new phone it should have been fine. I waited for 2 hours before i did the backup just to be sure if its working properly. It is still under warranty i only had it for 3 months so i will definately take it to be checked

Just head to your local Apple store as a starting point. My first visit there was useless, but the second time (for the sleep/wake button issue), the lady was very helpful, ran diagnostics, messed around with my settings, and spent a lot of time working with me. Of course, she was the one who broke my phone ultimately, so of course I thought she was great 🙂

In the end, unless Apple issues a recall of some kind, I think the only answer might be a phone replacement. You could try a battery replacement first, but I really don't thaink that's the issue (at least for me).

It sure seems like it. I don't think it's enough of a problem to warrant a recall, but there are so many posts online about battery issues. It does seem to be caused by a variety of things, so maybe that's why nobody (apple included) can pinpoint the issue. With so many apps available, I'm guessing that it's difficult to track down which apps may be affecting our phones, or possibly causing hardware issues (like a virus almost).

Bottom line is that you need to get to the Apple Store and hopefully walk away with a new phone...

THIS IS NOT YOUR PHONE.

I used to write networking software - not for Apple, but I know firmware.

I am using an iPhone 4 (yes, they still exist). Since mine is more limited, I see the problem more dramatically.

I am professionally convinced that parts of the network stack are checking for push messages too often than necessary, and that there are other bugs in the networking software or use of it that are causing a huge increase in network usage - a huge battery sucker. Your phone sends out little messages that say "Got any texts for me?", "Got any email for me?", etc., and shows you results when they come in. This is called "push messaging". My guess is that those messages are going out many times more often than they should, with a direct increase in battery drain.

I got some relief by switching all notifications to "Fetch" (which means that I only see new messages, badges, alerts, etc. if I go into the app). This doesn't work well with text messages, so that was left to "Push" (when a message comes in, you get the banner and the badge and the noise). That helped. Unfortunately, I was missing critical emails, so I changed email to "Push". BOOM! Battery life went through the floor.

Bluetooth is also affected. Normally bluetooth does not cause noticable problems, now it eats battery like the freaking Cookie Monster.

So: disable push notifications for everything you can. Definitely switch facebook and twitter and games and other nonsense to "fetch" only. Leave bluetooth off except when needed. Consider buying a Mophie (they rock anyway).

Hi! My iphone4S is almost unusable due to battery drain. I thought maybe the battery was old and rusty and had it changed for a new original one and gess what? No change.

I have location, Bluetooth, push, all disabled.... Even so I have to charge it twice a day...

And I notice that the iPhone is a little warm most of the time since the update....

My brother's iphone4S does the same.

I'm really thinking seriously on going back to May iPhone4 on iOS6!

Or buying an non an non apple phone (for the first time since iPhone3!)... Such a pitty....

Same problem here with iPhone 4S and IOS 7.1.

Two days ago I saw my Iphone eating the battery very fast and did a lot of tests:

1.- Looked at Usage Time vs Standby Time progress ( http://www.overthought.org/blog/2014/the-ultimate-guide-to-solving-ios-battery-d rain ) and saw that both of them progressed at the same rate, with the phone in apparent standby state.

2.- I begin to close the opened apps, two every time, and observed the battery consumption rate, and the Usage Time vs Standby Time. No results: with EVERY app closed, the result was the same = All time was usage time.

3.- I begin to disable Background App Refresh. First on an app basis and, finally, with the global switch. Result: nothing!

4.- I put the phone in airplane mode. Result: nothing!

5.- I switched off the location services. Result: nothing!

Finally the phone switched off itself with an already hot case.

Now I'll try an upgrade to 7.1.1, but am very worried after see this thread :-((

Iphone 5 was upgraded to 7.1.1 and had rapid battery drain. First visit to the genius bar was met with a snobby lady who told me my battery was fine, tough luck. I was charged to 100% at night, phone had turned off in the morning. I did all the suggested fixes and saw no difference. My usage and standby were the same if not very close, and no I was not using my phone for 5 hours straight. Went to a different Genius Bar and after many tests it was determined that it was a software issue so a clean re-install of ios 7.1.1 was done. If that didn't work It was suggested I download all of my photos onto my computer so I could do a factory reset. I kept searching for other things to try before taking that drastic measure and I found some of the typical fixes, from a former Genius Bar employee, along with the suggestion to change email push notification to fetch and low and behold that did the trick. Check this out:

After doing that I am seeing normal battery operation. Useage and standby are very different, as they should be. Hopefully this does it and I don't have to turn off all of the functionality of my phone to make the battery last a couple hours. I hope this works for everyone.

In Settings go to Mail, Contacts, Calendars > Fetch New Data > slide "push" to off

I have mine set to fetch every 15 minutes. You can change that setting to fetch less often by scrolling down while still in that menu.
