panic black screen

I have a mid 2010 15" MBP i5 with 8 gigs of ram running Snow Leopard 10.6.8

Three times in two months it crashes to black screen and the only way back it a hard (power button - off) restart. Then it works fine. I have to pay more attention as to what I was doing at the time, but in all three cases I was actively using the keyboard. I do not have any video games on this laptop. I can't say for sure, but I am thinking it happens when I execute something new, today it happened when using Chrome. I either just launched it, or more likely it crashed when I hit RETURN to initiate a search.

Hey there CAPTJON,

It sounds like you are getting intermittent Kernel Panics. I would use the information in the following article to help troubleshoot the issue, named:

OS X: When your computer spontaneously restarts or displays "Your computer restarted because of a problem."

http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4636

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

All the very best,

Sterling

Thank you Sterling,

But my MBP is not restarting - it just goes black.

I pulled the error logs, but never get the kernel panic screen, or any of the following text -
"When your computer spontaneously restarts or displays "Your computer restarted because of a problem."

I am familiar with how they look. I had the problematic graphics card in my pervious MBP. Is there an address where I can email the three latest crash reports?

Thanks

Thank you for the clarification.

In light of this new info, I would reset your SMC first, then reset your PRAM, and perform a Safe Boot and test the issue for a while to see if it returns.

If the issue persists, I would like to thank you for using the Apple Support Community. Due to the nature of your issue you may find more information by using another one of Apple's support resources - https://getsupport.apple.com/GetproductgroupList.action.

Good morning Sterling,

I reset the SMC and PRAM as you suggested, but continue experience black screen crashes every 2 - 3 weeks. My MBP gets lots of use. For another reason altogether I reinstalled 10.6.8 (yeah, I know - but I wanted to resolve this before upgrading). Following this reinstall I also ran the MacBook Pro Video Update 1.0 (Snow Leopard) one more time just to be safe, but this had no bearing on the black screen problems.

I now have about ten complete error reports. On most of them I noted exactly what I was doing at the time. What ever the task was, the crash occurred as soon as I hit ENTER to execute (such as a download to pdf.).

Is there someone that would review the crash reports to see if we can pinpoint the problem? I read about the extended graphics card warranty, but I am a few months beyond the 3 years (plus my Applecare expired).

On my 2007 15" MBP I had to have the logic board and NVIDIA card replaced at the 2 year mark. In that instance I didn’t get black screens - only bright, multicolored lines on the display - enough to make Peter Max envious (Yes, I am very OLD).

Thank you for your assistance.

Black screen - Two Time in Two Days -

Mail and Safari were open.

I was on a website and going to attempt to capture a partial screen shot using Monosnap. I was in the process of dragging across the area that I wanted to capture with Monosnap when the screen went black.

I powered it off, restarted and saved on more error log.

Anyone have ideas ??

Good morning Sterling -

I was hoping to hear back from you about where I can send my error reports for review, but I guess you anticipate the question by providing the support URL. However I did try all of the suggestions above, and thank you, No change, so my last ditch effort is https://getsupport.apple.com/GetproductgroupList.action. I have been holding off in this because I thought I should try one last strategy - Denial! I gave it a couple weeks, and with the exception of the black screen crashes it might hove worked! ;-)

I will take a look at the support site, but it is looking like the video card and I am not quite ready for this reality. it has happened about 14 times since March. Like Jack Nicholson said in one if his movies, "you (me) can't handle the truth!"

I seem to incompatible with NVIDIA, it had to be replaced in my previous MBP. I have been told it is my negative energy so I even tried tin foil (shiny side in). I am a few months beyond the extended coverage on this item, even with Apple Care - also expired. If I get any more info pointing to this, do you have a rough idea on the cost of parts alone? (with board I assume?).

Thanks for your input, and it you have any last minute thoughts, like something simple and cheap - feel free to share!!!
