A movie rented on an Apple TV can only be viewed on that Apple TV. If you want to view on multiple Apple TV's you need to rent via computer and use home sharing.
Again, that is not true. A rental is not tied to your Apple ID, it is not a purchase and thus not included in your history to stream on other devices.
When rented on a computer you can stream via home sharing, or sync to a mobile device. It will then only be available on one device at a time.
There is documentation to support this as well as experienced-based testing. This is a limitation put in place by the studios for licensing purposes.
VizAndrew is not quite right. You cant watch the movie at the same time, but you CAN watch it in different rooms at different times 🙂.
My family do this all the time. I have a AppleTV 2 in one room and an AppleTV 3 in the other, and have both logged into the same Apple ID.
The only thing which sometimes stops a movie being watched on the alternative Apple TV is that the movie has not finished playing all the way through:
- If you stop a movie during the credits it is still associated with the Apple TV box you just watched it on (and cant be watched in the other room).
- Fast Forward the movie right to the end (or just let it run till it finishes).
- When you see the screen which has all the details of the movie on it (where the "Play" or "Preview"buttons are), then you can watch the movie in the other room.
It just takes a bit of coordination between family members. The rental is associated with your Apple ID, NOT with a particular Apple TV box.
Friends - I am talking about RENTING movies. I dont understand why others say differently. My actual, real-life experience is as I described previously.
I CAN watch rented movies on different boxes, you just can't do it on more than one box at the same time. My family do this all the time. Not sure why this is such a mystery or debate.
Thank you so much for your help.
Best Regards,
Mike
No problem.
That is incorrect. A purchased movie is stored with your Apple ID and can be viewed on any device. A rental can only exist on the device on which the rental took place, unless done via computer.
