disable startup sound
i just got a Macbook Air and want to disable the loud startup sound. How can i do that? I think my software is os x 10.9.2

Not a good idea to do that.
That startup chime means your Mac has passed it's startup diagnostics test.
If you disable that, you may not be aware of a problem with your Mac until it's too late.
Have you tried muting your sound before shutting down or rebooting?
There are utilities that will stop the startup chime. For my iMac I use psst. There are others. Note: my MacBook Pro does not need past, as muting the sound works for that.
Muting doesn't help. It is so obnoxious :(
The simplest solution:
Go to Applications>Utilities>Terminal and type (or copy/paste) the next line to change the startup sound volume:
sudo nvram SystemAudioVolume=%10
(“%10” is the volume…you can use %00-%100)
To restore it to the original value type:
sudo nvram -d SystemAudioVolume

If that doesn't work try resetting the NVRAM / PRAM first.
