Linksys routers with MAC OS

I am new to using a mac, and just got one in the other day. We need to setup a wireless network. The mac will be wired, and I will have a pc that will need to be wireless. I did not get the airport setup in the mac. When I was at best buy last night and looking at the linksys routers, it didn't have mac os in the system requirements. Do linksys not work with macs? If not, what wireless router do you recommend? I would prefer for a recomendation on a router that one can go into any electronic store and buy, rather then one from apple. I need it quick for work, and can't get to the mac store near me.

macpro, Mac OS X (10.4.7)

You say the Mac will be wired. Thus you need not worry about the Airport (which is what Apple calls their wireless option). A Mac connected to a wired router looks to the router just like any other PC. Ethernet is an industry standard and is supported by every operating system I've seen in the last 10 years. Failure to list Mac as a system requirement is like failing to note that the router works with Linux or OS/2. It does work with both, but the fact is Windows has the majority marketshare so it's what most users are interested in. I use a Linksys WRT54GS router with both a Windows PC and a Mac. There's no issues whatsoever that I have seen.

The biggest issue may be what type of modem or broadband you use as to what to get. Motorola modems seem to run slower on (PPC) Macs, don't know yet about Mac Pro.

Along with Linksys, which seems to see a fairly frequent firmware updates, there is D-Link, and my favorite, Netgear (modems and routers).

Amazon UK is always a good place to shop if you can do an over-night maybe?

I have a silly question about this . the Mac pro comes with a Gigi Ethernet connection. Right now i have a Belkin Pre N wireless router which works great , both kids are wireless in there rooms one on a PC laptop the other on a Macbook. But am i limited to the cable modem here. I have cox cable as my internet . What i am wondering is i have a Linksys cable modem box. Would I be getting that Gigi data from it or do i need to upgrade on this to get the Gigi speeds. This is sort of confusing

Your cable modem service is probably 10Mb or less, so you don't need Gigabit.

But I would want to have a router (you can have 2 or more) between you and the modem, if only for another layer, a way to have a LAN, and to use router's firewall and DDoS feature protection.

But in front of any modem, should be a modem surge protector, whether cable (coax) or DSL, or dial-up. APC recommends an RJ45 filter because even what gets through the first surge protector can still fry an ethernet port on a computer.

I recommend both as well. I had a situation in a thunderstorm once where everything was covered under UPS except for a phone line to my ADSL modem. I normally have my phone line protected via UPS but was messing around and forgot to put it back the way it should be.

Anyway, a lightning strike hit and sent who knows what through the phone line which lit everything up on the DSL modem and literally blew out it's power cable with sparks, pass it onto the Ethernet switch it was connected to and lit it all up as well. The switch then in turn passed it on further to my PowerBook, which was sleeping at the time, where it thought it was Network Administrator activity and woke up.

Thankfully nothing was fried and I wasn't using my PowerBook at the time but you never know what can happen.
