I have a 16GB ipad mini w/retina that shows that I have used 11.7GB of storage, but the total of all of my Apps is approx. 3.7GB. I do not have any videos or pictures or music on it. How do I find out what is using the other 8GB of space?

Settings / General / Usage / Storage Wait for the list to build, may need to tap on Show All Apps. For a detailed rundown, tap on each successive app and you'll be advised on how much room the program and its documents take.
Thank you for the response - I have done that already and all I can come up with for App usage of 3.7GB but the total used shows 11.8GB. I can not find the other 8GB. I also have an IPAD 2 16GB that has many more APPS, music, movies and pictures on it and it has more space avaliable than the mini. It doesn't make sense.
The other day we had a similar issue with a colleague's iPad we wanted to upgrade. It turned out that a clip he had downloaded of a local event had ended up in the Photos app and not Videos. All 6GB of it.
