    Welcome!

Actually, printers for those early Macs used the serial port, not the ADB port. There were once adaptors that let you convert a serial port to ethernet, but they are hard to find. Also, you'll have trouble find any drivers for newer ethernet-capable printers.

About all you can do is search for an old used printer that was compatible with the serial port. Apple Laserwriter 4/600s were great, compact printers that were contemporary with the 6200. Their drivers should already be installed

As an aside we suffered through the built-in problems of a 6200 for several years before writing it off. However, about the time we parted it out, we discovered something about RAM.  Although officially, the 6200 is not supposed to require matched RAM module sizes, ours did better once I installed a matched pair of 32MB sticks to reach the computer's max RAM of 64MB

The Apple Desktop Bus (ADB) is used for the connection of a mouse, a keyboard and certain special devices.

A printer would use the Performa 6200CD Printer Port or (if a network card has been added) an Ethernet port. The Printer Port can handle both a serial printer and a LocalTalk network printer. An Ethernet port can handle a network printer (using either the AppleTalk protocol or TCP/IP.

Many older printers can be used with a computer of this type. One of the many monochrome laser printers from Apple should work fine. Apple's StyleWriter II, a compact black and white inkjet printer, could be another possibility. If colour is needed, Epson's Stylus Color 740 would be merely one example.

If you are near Seattle, WA, you can go to a computer recycling store and find older hardware that they have saved from the crushers.  They no longer fix up older printers for the showroom but they will fix a printer on request.

Name a large city near you.  Maybe we can help you find a user group with old timers who can help.

We had a 6200 and it was not known to be the best of models.  Can you move to a different computer?  There are better printers available for a G3 generation computer.  Are you trying to print files for archiving or trying to use that computer as a daily print machine.  Moving a hard drive to a more capable computer might involve less effort.  If you have to go to ebay to find things, you may be better off making a wholesale shift.  What are your motives?

Thanks for the reply. I have been using this 6200 for 17 years and it has been extreemly reliable. I have a lot of Claris word files and use Quicken 7 for business accounting and memorized reports that are generated each month, which is why I'm trying to find another printer to use with it. I wouldn't think that after all this time using these now outdated programs, that I could transfer those files and to a new computer, particularly since the only way I can download those files are on floppy disks.

Any advise you can give on this is much appreciated. Thank you

    Step 1: Pray!

Step 2: Open each account register in Quicken and EXPORT to a QIF File.

Step 3: Save all of the QIF files to some transferable medium that can be transferred to a modern day Mac.

    Step 4: Pray!

When the day comes that your Mac dies, you may be able to import your QIF files into Quicken 2007 for Mac, which is available for $15 by download from Intuit and will run in Snow Leopard, Lion, Mt. Lion and Mavericks:

Do you need to continue to access your Claris word files; or are printed copies enough?

Michael is dead on.  If you value the information, you need to pack your parachute now.

My wife recently attempted to retrieve a wedding list from her computer.  The list was created in Clarisworks.  Her current software does not read the file properly. I said that I would take a look at it.

Using several different options within a few different programs, I could see the data but it was worthless as an address list.  Word 2004 gave an option to 'retrieve text from any source' - not the exact menu option but close - and it did a nice job of filtering out the garbage and code characters.  Unfortunately, the clean copy of the information was grouped by field type.  All last names were on one page.  All salutations were on another page.  All street addresses were on another and PO boxes were on another.  Yes, you could print the list and take scissors and cut and paste the list back together, but which PO box went with which name?  For detective work, it was useful.  For mailing lables, it was worthless.

We can sympathize.  We still use a 1992 Quadra 700 for real estate documents.  We were in the process of archiving files from a Filemaker Pro 2.1 file to tab delimited files two days ago when a client called and wanted information from 1996.

We have the luxury of having over 500 used macintoshes and several printers from many generations.  We can swap out a dead machine with a replacement.  However, the reality is that those machines are going to die slow deaths.  The data only lives on if it is kept current in a generic format. The current version of Filemaker does not even go back as far as FP version 9, let alone FP 2.1.  Even FP9 files need to migrate to stay accessable.

My favorite car is a 1985 Subaru Brat.  No car made today serves my needs as well as that model.  But, I can no longer get engines for that car.  What a loss.  All in the name of progress.
