do you have a bootable external drive from which you could start up?
If your Mac has a FireWire port, and you have access to a FireWire cable and a second Mac with a FireWire port, you could boot your Mac into Target Disk mode to have it act like an external disk on the second Mac, from which you could run Disk Utility against your Mac’s internal drive to verify (and possibly repair) it.
