Q: can I mirror MacBook pro mid-10 to apple tv with something when internet in not available

I have a apple tv 3 and a MacBook pro mid -10. all I want to do is mirror to a projector, sometimes I don't have internet. I do have an airstash but the apple tv will not connect to the network, had the same problem with a wireless hot spot. What can I use to connect to the apple tv?

Apple TV, OS X Mavericks (10.9.2)

You wouldn't be able to use native mirroring as that requires a Mac from 2011 or later. You will have to use a 3rd party program like Airparrot.

Mirroring has nothing to do with the internet, it would be the source (ie website) that requires that. It is then transferred over the local network. All you need is a router in order to setup this up.

Actually you can use native mirroring  on an old macbook pro. As long as you have upgraded your operating system to M-Lion or Maveric. (the way the operating system works is it works out if your computer is strong enough to push out video to the apple3.  eg.. I have a very old mac air and it was able to push videostream out via itunes to the apple 3 (running image 5.X??). After I upgraded the apple3 to 6.xx that feature did not work.

Feedback from the apple engineer I spoke to on this matter explained that as the reason.. (the operating system will work out if it is possible to do).

As to the problem of the apple3.

The apple 3 can connect to a network if there is a local one. If this is the case and it is connected to  a local network, and your macbook pro is on the same network you will see the apple 3 airplay icon with the macbook pro.

to ensure you are on the same network, you can to ping the I.P. of the apple3

Streaming via iTunes is basic airplay. You cannot mirror your display natively on old hardware because the feature requires the newer processor.

You are correct about mirroring upto a point.. (ref: my previous comment from the apple support engineer..  _ I will quote directly.  The Apple  operating system will support Airplay {iincluding mirroring} if it thinks the computer can perorm the task} where the software on the apple TV is version 5.x...

However I pointed out that you can still send movies..etc. to the appletv, again assuming your appletv software is 5.x..

I wish my apple tv did not upgrade.... lesson from this..  keep version 5.x on your apple TV. never upgrade.. too painfull.

Your post of a link is helpfull but for public consumption and an official statemnt from apple, not in reality for version 5.x on apple tv3.

but.. my comments for version 5.x will be mute if apple tv v 5.x is not used.

    Hope I helped somewhat.

Yes, and  the reality is that hardware older then 2011 cannot perform the task natively. Airplay mirroring uses the processor's GPU for video encoding, which is touched on in the link. The older macs don't have this capability. I am not sure who you spoke to, a quote doesn't equate to much if there is no source to backup, but that is misinformation.

Again, sending movies or other media is not mirroring. That is basic airplay. Showing your entire Macs display via airplay mirroring requires the above.

Older hardware can still do it via 3rd party software, but this will be using the CPU and as such results will vary greatly.

Very True you can use any old mac with say Air parrot. (( be it not that useable .. )) but if you follow the link and discussions you will see that part in my conversations.

Again .. I am not taling about mirroring in this example.

As I stated " I will repeat what I had. to help.. (as this is not stated in any of the official apple refferences you have)::I have a 5 year old mac air :: On the 5 year old MAc air, the air play icon was not avialble on the desktop with apple tv v5.x.  however airplay and its icon was availble with itunes.

That worked like a treat for any movie upto 720p rez.. anthing higher and the Mac Air had CPU problems de-coding and playing the movie.

I raised the ticket with apple to see about lowering the apple tv software to versaion 5.x after it auto upgraded to version 6.1.

As I know now that it is not possible to re-lower the software version, it dissapointed me .. (( as expected).

I hope that clears up the crossed conversation wires. and sory about getting my words crossed.. as it did add to the confsusion.

Not sure what link you are referring to, you posted one that really had no relevance to the topic.

As none of this had to do with mirroring i'm not really sure what was meant to add to this thread, and the issue described sounds more like an issue with the Mac then ATV.

So if I get one the travel routers, even if there is no internet conection, it will connect to the airstash, and the apple tv, and I should be good to go with airparrot? I'm presenting spreadsheets and keynote type media. I counldn't see why internet would have anything to do with the mirroring. Thanks for all the help
