    For the actual System version click on the Apple icon at the extreme left of the menu bar and choose 'About this Mac'. Under 'Mac OSX' it will give the version.

     

    For an application, click the Application once in the Finder (not the Dock) to highlight it and hit command-i to bring up the info pane, for example:
