Is it possible to download an upgrade for my Macbook OS X v 10.6.8 so that I can use the iCloud?
I am new to Mac having inherited a Macbook and would like to use the iCloud to sync to my iPhone 4S.

iCloud requires 10.7.2, or higher for its features. Lion and Mountain lion are sold via redemption code at the Apple Store. 10.9 Mavericks is a free download via the App Store.
You can use iTunes to put stuff on, or take stuff off your phone. You can use the compuuter as a backup location, too.
You can share Mail, Calendars, and Contacts running Snow Leopard. Based on my experience, I don't recommend syncing Contacts - created a lot of problems with duplicates.
