Installing os9 on imac g5 without osx?

Jim, I don't think G5 iMacs can boot Mac OS 9.

Computers that cannot startup into OS 9 are listed in this article:

The iMac (Flat Panel) with serial numbers of xx303xxxxxx or later is listed in the above article. ALL iMac G5s would be considered "or later" in that case therefore would not be able to startup into OS 9 exclusively.

Pray tell why would you wish to do this? What would hope to gain?

Ignoring the fact that G5s were released after the ability to boot to OS 9 was dropped so that this is no longer possible, I am curious as what purpose you think this might provide.

Do you know an answer to this? I have a friend who wants to transfer his Outlook Express old emails to Mail on his new G5 imac (purchased in Feb). He has transferred everything else. He took the Microsoft User folder off his old hard drive (with the idenities folder within) and then opened Mail on his new machine. He then went to import mailboxes and clicked next to the Outlook Express listing...but then it said it was unable to find Outlook Express. I have now learned that OE is not on the G5s. Is it possible to import these old emails at all? or does he have to download OE? If he does, will it even run on a imac G5 since it is an OS 9 application?

Please help if you can!

What a good idea. I dont like X either.

Although Apple saythat new models boot X only, the Hardware Test CDs
have Mac OS 9 on them. I asked apple about how I install the standard 9 on a new mac and I willl post a topic when and if they answer.

They say that because it's true, hoja. There's no way an Intel Mac will ever boot into OS 9. OS 9 has no conception of how to talk to an Intel processor, and vice versa — they inhabit different universes. You're no more likely to start a new Mac in OS 9 than you are to start your car after filling its fuel tank with milk.
