    TYLERinDENVER,

with your usual set of simultaneously opened apps running, also run Activity Monitor. Select its Memory tab, and please include in your reply the information found on both sides of the Memory Pressure graph.

Mail, Calendar, Word and Safari eat up most all of the physical RAM (4GB). Opening any additional apps consumers > the available physical RAM. Has OSX really become that large and RAM intensive to run? The list below is incomplete and has been cut off due to window size; it is organized by memory consumed.

You have enough Ram and enough diskspace.

But yes, even if what I am going to suggest now does not solve the issues, you will will have to clean your system with uninstalling some crap and/or counterproductive software:

    -- Uninstall all Seagate software.

-- Uninstall or remove the leftovers of an earlier WesternDigital software

-- Uninstall the Roxio software (you may later re-install when we are really sure that it is compatible).

-- I am not sure the windows keyboard hz drivers are compatible, uninstall now, we will check later.

-- You have used Monolingual: this is disastrous, after the cleaning we will have to restore the OSX.

-- If you do not absolutely need Paragon NTFS, take it out of the systemPreferences. We will decide later.

Restart, empty the trashbin, and make a new etrecheck list.

    Thx for the suggestions.

    - Segate software removed.

    - Not finding anything WesternDigital, do I need to search specifically for something? Are some orphan files showing up?

    - Roxio unistalled, all components. Should be Mac compatible as it is build specifically for Macs no?

    - Windows keyboard drivers, not sure how to locate/ unistall. Likely installed as part of VMware for windows partitions. I will need some keyboard drivers to use the windows partitions correct?

    - Monolingual, trouble go figure!

    - NTFS driver can be disabled, have done so. This is used regularly to transfer large files between a Mac and PC via an external USB drive.

    NTFS.png

    - Removed and cleaned up a number of additonal old programs and apps that are no longer needed.

Emptying trash only it is set for secrure empty so this will take some time to delete the 70k files. Will rerun EtreCheck when it finishes and post new results.

Apr 30, 2014 5:50 PM in response to TYLERinDENVER

The kernel is using excessive processor cycles. Below are some possible causes for the condition.

    Throttling

When it gets high temperature readings from the hardware, or a low-voltage reading from the battery, the kernel may try to compensate by interrupting the processor(s) to slow them down and reduce power consumption. This condition can be due to

    • a buildup of dust on the logic board
    • high ambient temperature
    • a worn-out or faulty battery in a portable
    • the malfunction of a cooling fan, a temperature sensor, a voltage sensor, or some other internal component

Note that if the problem is caused by a sensor, there may be no actual overheating or undervoltage.

If the computer is portable, test with and without the AC adapter connected. If kernel_task hogs the processor only on battery power, the fault is in the battery or the logic board. If it happens only on AC power, charging is causing the machine to heat up. That may be normal on some models. CPU usage should drop when charging is complete.

Apple Diagnostics or the Apple Hardware Test, though not very reliable, is sometimes able to detect a fault. For more thorough hardware testing, make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider.

If nothing is wrong with the hardware, then whatever you can do to improve cooling may help.

    Installed software

User-installed software that includes a device driver or other kernel code may thrash the kernel. That category includes virtualization software, such as Parallels and VMware, as well as most commercial "anti-virus" products. Some system-monitoring applications, such as "iStat," can also contribute to the problem. You can test for this possibility by completely disabling or removing the software according to the developer's instructions, or starting in safe mode. Note, however, that disabling a system modification without removing it or testing in safe mode may not be as easy as you think.

    Corrupt NVRAM or SMC data

Sometimes the problem is cleared up by resetting the NVRAM or the SMC.

    External display

Connecting an external LCD display to some MacBook Pro models may cause this issue. If applicable, test by disconnecting the display. You might get better results with a newer LED display.

    TYLERinDENVER,

Mavericks allocates RAM in a different way from all previous versions of OS X, so it’s perfectly normal for the Memory Used to be nearly equal to the Physical Memory. Since you’re using 6 GB of Virtual Memory with 1 GB Compressed, you might benefit by upgrading from 4 GB of RAM to 8 GB of RAM. Once you’ve followed the advice of LexSchellings and Linc Davis, do another Activity Monitor check to see if your usual set of apps still require the same amount of virtual memory.

Look for "wdhelper" in the LaunchDaemons folder.

When after the cleaning and following Linc's advice, the ram use is the same: Melophage gives excellent advice about more Ram.

Per advice, removed problematic software as listed by Lex as well as additional old/ unused software and apps. Removed WDigatal & SMS daemon apps. Reset NVRAM and SMC per Linc (power vs battery power didn't make a difference on kernel processes. Reinstalled OSX. System is running faster, not blazing fast but notably faster than before.

Kernerl seems to still be using a lot of memory but per Linc's comments above that could be the result of VMware which is installed and used regularly.

Thx all for your comments and suggestions!

    Lex -

Are you asking if the computer has changed or suggesting based upon the report that nothing has changed? Followed suggestions step by step with the exception of removing the windows keyboard hz drivers. From a subjectiver perspective computer is running faster; reduced program/ app loading tme and notably less spinning beach ball.

    Summary of sctions:

    - Removed software as advised by Lex (see list above)

    - Reset NVRAM & SMC per Linc's suggestion

    - Reinstalled OSX

Tyler, the problem parts of the removed softwares are still there.

    Remove manually:

    1. Paragon NTFS (in SystemPreferences)

    2. Go to  MacintoshHD->Library->Extensions  folder, in there delete  the 4 files with Seagate in the name.

and remove the file with Roxio in the name.

    3. Go to  MacintoshHD->Library->LaunchDaemons  folder, in there delete   the file with adobe.Switchboard  in the name.

    4.  Go to  MacintoshHD->Library->LaunchAgents  folder, in there delete   the file with adobe.AAM.Updater.. in the name.

    5.  In Finder menupoint GO hold the Alt(option) key and choose Library then in there open the LaunchAgents  folder, in there delete   the  files with adobe  in the name.

Restart the computer and empty the Trash bin.

then post a new etrecheck list.

I will be travelling all day today so, I will be back after 10 hours or so.
