wireless mouse won't work on flat surface

My wireless mouse refuses to track on flat surfaces like a mouse pad or the desktop. However, when I lay a t-shirt on the desk top it works fine. It works on my pant leg, my skin but not on the type of surface it is supposed to work on. This is a very recent development, worked fine one day and not the next.

I've blown compressed air at the lens and inspected it and there does not seem to be any abnormality.

Could it just be going bad? It is a few years old.

My mouse will track on anything. I don't know why but when I set up my mouse, I found the mouse pad too small so I made my own out of a fine matt black felt that I found in an artist's materials store. It is as much material, as those you described and I've never had a moment's problem with it.

You could try an alternate kind of cleaning agent on the sensor such as a cotton bud dampened, but not wet, with white vinegar, then leave for thirty minutes to dry. Remember to take out the batteries before you do this.
