Q: Run iPhoto slideshow on 2nd display without 1st display going black?

Hi there,

I can't seem to find a clear answer on this one. I have just connected a 2nd display to my mac mini via the thunderbolt connection. When I put iPhoto 11 onto the 2nd display desktop and run a slideshow it plays on the 2nd screen but my 1st screen goes black, which isnt ideal as I want to be able to carry on working on my 1st screen.

Is iPhoto 11 able to run a slideshow on a 2nd display without 1st display going black? If not, is there a way around this by using other software?

I have the 2nd display set up in extended mode not mirror.

I am running OSX 10.9.2.

Many thanks,

Andy.

Is iPhoto 11 able to run a slideshow on a 2nd display without 1st display going black?

    No.

There may well be, but it's not possible with Aperture either.

    Alternatives to iPhoto's slideshow include:

iMovie is on every Mac sold.

    Others, in order of price:

    PhotoPresenter  $29

    PhotoToMovie  $49.95

    PulpMotion  $129

FotoMagico $29 (Home version) ($149 Pro version, which includes PhotoPresenter)

    Final Cut Pro X $299

It's difficult to compare these apps. They have differences in capability - some are driven off templates. some aren't. Some have a wider variety of transitions. Others will have excellent audio controls. It's worth checking them out to see what meets your needs. However, there is no doubt that Final Cut Pro X is the most capable app of them all. You get what you pay for.

    Thanks for the reply Dev.

So if I added some images to iMovie, I would have to maually make a slide show in iMovie adding any transitions I wanted, like fade for example. Then I would have to export that as a .mov and then run that on the second screen?

This movie would run full screen on the 2nd screen and not affect what I was doing on the 1st screen (like what currently happens when I try to run the iPhoto slideshow on the 2nd screen, 1st screen goes blank) ?

Its a BIG shame iPhoto wont do it as all you have to do it drag images into it and press play, there seems to be alot more steps by using iMovie.

Does Photopresenter have a more simplfied process?

    Many thanks,

    Andy.

Sorry yes I should have looked at those links first.

Fotomagico looks promising, but I cant see anywhere on the website that says it will run a slideshow on the Second screen independently? I did search the support section but no simialr questions came up.

    Thanks to Devlin.

Fotomagic does the job perfectly, plays slideshow on screen 2 and I can still use screen 1.

You could also export the slideshow from iPhoto as a movie and then play that. No need to pay for other software.

Thanks Joe, in the end thats exactly what I did.

As Dev said iMovie will do full screen playback on a second screen, but I couldnt get that to loop. I could have created a slideshow in iMoive then exported a .m4v and looped that in Qiucktime, but why go through the manual work needed to create a simple slide show in iMovie, when iPhoto automates all that for you.

All you have to do is then export a .m4v from iPhoto, loop that in Quicktime, move that to the Second screen and go full screen.

    Thanks both for your help/suggestions.

Would be VERY helpful though if iPhoto could go full screen playback on a second screen without making the first screen go black. Just cuts down the extra step of having to export a .m4v.

You can run a photo slideshow on Preview while still having access to the other display.
