how do you charge a 1st Gen iPod Mini?

Hi all, I'm going to give my 1st Gen Ipod Mini to a friend that has a PC, I've lost the User guide that came with it and I can't remember if it possible to charge it up using USB via the computer instead of connecting it to a wall charger.

I've got it connected to my Mac using a USB V2 but nothing is happening, does anyone know?

also, does anyone know how I can wipe it's contents?

Restoring the iPod will erase the hard drive, reload the software and put it back to default settings: Restoring iPod to Factory Settings

It should be charging over the USB connection, if it is working normally it doesn't require a wall charger to keep it charged.

You can charge the iPod through USB. The only thing you have to watch out for is that it must be a powered USB port. For example, the two USB ports in a Macintosh keyboard are not powered, the ports in some USB hubs are not powered, but USB ports directly in the computer should be powered.

If that model of iPod is updated or restored with the iPod updater, it will likely need to be charged from a source other than the computer's USB ports to complete the process, and the iPod cannot be used if the process is incomplete at the time that someone tries to use it.
