Q: Will Xserve RAID work with Lion Server

I am working with an Xserve 1,1 (2006 vintage) currently running OS X Server 10.6.8. It is attached, using an Apple Fibre Channel Card, to an Xserve RAID.

I would like to install OS X 10.7.5 Server on this machine. Will the Fibre Channel app, Xserve RAID control app and -- most importantly -- the Xserve RAID -- still work?

I know some may say I should just stay on 10.6.8, but there are issues cropping up with the slow login problem that is widely documented, as well as some issues with binding to Win2008 AD. These problems were eliminated on another Xserve that did not have an Xserve RAID attached to it by upgrading to Lion Server.

Thank you,

Pete

Yes.  An Apple Xserve RAID will work with all versions of the OS through 10.9.x.

I will agree that 10.6.8 is a much better option than 10.7.  However, if you are binding to AD and only using file services, then you should be fine.  Just make sure you have access to the Lion Server app for 10.7.

Also, beware how full those Xserve RAIDs get.  When the volume is over 95% you can get some very odd behavior.

Thank you. The RAID has quite a bit of free space, actually, but thanks for the tip. I wish we could go to 10.8 on this box, but we just can't. And we are afraid to leave it on 10.6.8 when we bind to the new AD server, because of those slow login issues we've had elsewhere...

By any chance is your AD domain a .local domain?  Did you go beyond a 2008r2 domain?

A prime cause for slowness is due to the conflict with Bonjour discovery (.local).

But have no fear.  The Xserve RAIDs will run even on a new Mac Pro with a San Link adaptor.

Best of luck.  Keep em on the road.
