Raid Option not available in disk ut

I am trying to rebuild a raid that was actting funny. They are two seperate drives that are internal. After I frormated both of them when I look in disk utility and click highest disk, it does not give me an option to select Raid. How would I get around this to be able to get my raid back up.

MacBook Pro, OS X Mavericks (10.9.2)

did you format each individually?

are they both the same size, type, make? mixing drives in an array is not good idea.

Nothing on the drives now, reboot with Shift Key, or boot into Recovery Mode.

My OS is on one drive, TimeMachine another, and "/Users/myaccount" on third - very common, and you don't want media files and libraries on the boot drive. Ideal is a smaller fast SSD for just the system OS and apps.

Screen shot of what you see if either of the above, Safe or Recovery, is not able.

Or clone the system to external, slide out partially the system drive. Even one of the drives for the array.

And is this for a stripe or mirror? The data going on the array also needs to be backed up. And an array is not the best use for system. An SSD would be. Or for scratch for photoshop. Or for Lightroom and Aperture.
