Midi Sync
Can't figure out how to get my hardware midi gear to sync to Logics BPM, using Logic as the master and the hardware as slave. Please advise. Thank you.

What sync protocols does your hardware support?
I am using an ultranova as my midi controller via usb plus I want to sync a Roland TR-8 and TB-3 to logics BPM as well. Not sure about sync protocols Erik.
Well, you're going to have to dig up the manuals for that hardware then, or at least their MIDI implementation charts. It's Roland, should be easy to find.

You will use "MIDI Clock". The real question is what kind of a MIDI connection are you going to use to these devices. They both have USB but three USB devices hooked to the computer may not be practical. You could try it with USB, both the TB-3 and TR-8 should be running off their own power supplies.
Are you using a "real" audio interface or the built in audio?
Either use an audio interface with standard MIDI port, (run one unit off this and the other unit USB) or purchase a dual port MIDI interface like a MOTU, don't go for the cheapies.
In Logic's Settings/Synchromization you would send MIDI Clock to the MIDI IN ports of these devices, both devices would be set to external sync.
Pancenter,
I am using a Focusrite Saphire Pro 40. I was thinking I could usb the Ultranova to the Saphire then midi chain the TR-8 TB-3 through the Ultranova. Does that make sense? Maybe I could USB the Ultranova then midi sync the TB-3 to the TR-8 and plug the TR-8 into the Saphire midi ports?
Also,
I tried syncing the Ultranova to the BPM of Logic X. It only midi syncs when Logic is playing or recording. The Ultranova is supposed to "Flywheel" to the last midi signal, but it drops a few BPM's when I stop Logic and therefore falls out of sync. Any ideas on that?
Thanks so much for your help.

I don't see how you can USB theUltra to the Focusrite, do you mean internally in Logic? Only one of your Units has a MIDI Thru, the Ultranova... remember, MIDI Out is not a Thru port unless the hardware unit contains a built in merge, in which case you will see an option for a "Soft Thru" on the MIDI setup page of your hardware units. (TB-3 or TR-8)
I would try syncing one of the units from the MIDI Out of the Saffire and one of the Units via USB connection. Do both the TB-3 & TR-8 show up in Audio/MIDI Setup when USB plugged into the computer?
Logic only sends MIDI clock when the sequencer is running... As for flywheeling not staying in sync I would check MIDI Prefs and Settings to see what other MIDI commands are being sent when you stop the sequencer. (All Notes off...etc)
Also, under "Synchronization" MIDI set the MIDI clock destination ports directly, do not select All. ALL creates unneeded overhead and has been proven to cause some problems.
