Nicknames as email addressee

I am setting up my contacts list with the full name i.e. 'Mr and Mrs John Smith' and inserting a nickname 'John'. I assumed for e-mail I could set a preference to use the nickname 'John' or even the first name as the addressee in an e-mail. Does Anyone know how to do this? I have the same problem with my Ipad although I have it set up in mail contacts, short name to use nicknames as a preference the full title 'Mr and Mrs John Smith' is automatically inserted in the To: address. The reason for using the full title, I was hoping to use the contacts list for mailing lables. I appologise if i have entered this in the wrong board but I couldnt find one for Mavericks. What is the difference between Mavericks and Mountain Lion?

Thansk for your help.

iMac, OS X Mavericks (10.9.2), 3.2 GHz Intel Core i5, 8GB 1600MHz

If you are using Contacts in OS 10.9.2, in the first line, you can enter the name in any form. When you send an email, the To: field will be filled with the person's email address, not the name in the first line. That is the only way it can find its way to the intended receipient.

Mountain Lion is OS 10.8

Mavericks is OS 10.9

I have asked for your post to be moved.

If you intend to do this to many receipients, firstly, I would set up the contact template to always contain the Prefix and nickname.

To do this, Launch Contacts > Preferences > Templates > Add Field

and Add Prefix and Nickname to the list.

Now create a new contact and add the information in the fields.

Once created, in Mail, if you start typing the Nickname, the Contact will be found .

If the contact already exists, you can add these addition fields by editing the Contact and Selecting Card > Add Field

Thanks for this actionmaker.

I have been doing exactly as you descibe.

So just to double check I have created a new contact as per your example.

and it all works as you describe and the JJ(Jack Smith)<smith@123.com> appears in the 'To' field

but when you click the message box to type your message the 'To' reverts to Mr and Mrs Jack Smith!

I think what I am trying to do is not possible which is a shame.
