You don't. You restore the bootable backup/clone or Time Machine backup of your previous OS.

Have you seen the 'user tips'…

    https://discussions.apple.com/community/mac_os/os_x_mavericks?view=documents

There are 2 tips for 'restoring or reverting' from 10.9.

It helps if you have a backup from before you installed 10.9, please claify what disks or backups you have if you need more help.

Otherwise you will need to copy the files from 10.9 & reinstall the old OS & restore your files. Some apps will not run on 10.8 & earlier, so I strongly suggest you make a full copy of the 10.9 disk if you have used apps like Pages which have new file formats. That way you can reboot into 10.9 & export the files for use with older apps.

    Tinekeh,

Its not an easy process.  I actually migrated to Mavericks when it was released and spent most of the Christmas holiday rebuilding it back to Mountain Lion.  The two people above are correct, you must have an image or Time Machine backup to restore from or you're sunk, well, for an "easy" fix at least.

    Good luck!

This is infuriating.  I replied yes to an inocuous request if I wanted to upgrade to Mavericks OSX on my MacBook Pro.  I said yes and now MS Word 2011 gets stuck in start up.  I have to force a quit to use the computer at all. I have a project I need to to, so back to my desktop PC to get it done.  And I get to spend a few hours trying to figure out how to fix it.  ARRRRRRGH!!!!!

Do you always respond and do what ever a random message pops up at you?

Especially when you are right in the middle of an important and critical project?

    Really?

    How helpful of you.

I wasn't in the middle of a project when I "upgraded".

It wasn't a random request.  It came from Apple.  Not even Microsoft dumps a buggy program like this on its customers making their not so dated software programs not just obsolete but unworkable.

You are asked if you would like to download it. It is entirely up to you from then on if you wish to accept the terms and then install it. It is at that point that you have the oportunity to deny the install, research it further, take the opportunity to make a complete backup of your current system, etc. and if after this you decide that the new OSX is not for you, then just don't hit install. It does not install without you giving it permission.

    Again,

Just because a message popped up for you do to something doesn't mean you needed or had to take immediate action on the whatever the message told you.

    You chose to just act.

DId you even know what you were downloading and installing?

For all you may or may have not known, you could've been installing a Trojan or virus?

DId you even know Mavericks was a major systems upgrade?

You only have yourself to blame for your current predicament. NOT Apple.

MS Word 2011 is compatible with Mavericks. This isn't an issue of either Mavericks or MS Word being bad or buggy software. Something is wrong with your system, and there's no way to identify what that might be based on such sparse information. Could be some other bad third-party software, could be a corrupt system, could be a corrupt Word install, could be the initial stages of some kind of hardware failure. Could be something else entirely.

If you need help, you'll want to start your own topic and clearly explain the problem. Avoid the negativity and blaming Mavericks for no good reason, as you have already seen a sample of how those kinds of posts are typically received here.
