setting up thunderbird with an icloud alias

I can only add an email address with the .me ending to thunderbird, this is my main icloud email address. I want to use one of my email alises, yes the alias does come thru into the main inbox but I have to change the reply to my alias and this may look like spam. So how do I just use my icloud alias in thunderbird? The mail app just fails too often for my liking with gmail and other email accounts so it is not an option for me. Thanks. Also I just noticed thunderbird is not in notification center, any fix for that?

Mac mini, OS X Mavericks (10.9.2)

Hello,

I use Thunderbird as my primary mail client on my MacBook Air and I love it. I find it much more capable than Mail.app and, for that matter, Postbox.app as well (upon which Thunderbird serves as the basis of its code), which I had been using for a couple years. I love the extensions available for T-Bird which extend its capabilities even further.

The process to set up your iCloud email aliases in Thunderbird is simple, and only takes a few steps and a minute or so of your time. These steps are below:

Before You Begin

If you have an iCloud email alias (or perhaps aliases—as of this writing (June 28, 2014), Apple allows you to configure up to two (2) distinct alias email addresses in addition to your main iCloud email address. That means you can have up to a total of three (3) distinct @iCloud email addresses.

Example of When to Send From an Email Alias

Joe Schmo has the email alias JoeSchmoLumber@iCloud.com. Joe receives email sent to JoeSchmoLumber@iCloud.com in his regular JoeSchmo@iCloud.com account. When Joe replies to those emails, he wants the messages to be sent from JoeSchmoLumber@iCloud.com instead of from his personal email account. To do this, Joe needs to create an identity for JoeSchmoLumber@iCloud.com in Thunderbird.

Configure Thunderbird with an Identity

To configure Thunderbird so you can send email from an email alias, do the following:

  1. Open Thunderbird.
  2. Click Tools > Account Settings..

If Thunderbird is configured with more than one account, choose the account on the left to which you would like to add the identity.

  3. Click the Manage Identities... button.
  4. Click Add...
  5. Complete the Identity Settings page as follows:
    • Your Name: Type your name as you want it appearing to your email recipients. This name will appear when you send email using this alias.

    • Email Address: Type the address of the email alias. Following the example above, Joe would enter JoeSchmoLumber@iCloud.com.
    • Signature Text: Type a signature to use when sending email from the email alias. Joe would enter the name of his organization or company, phone number, etc. You are not required to enter a signature; if you do not want to use a signature with the email alias, leave this box empty.
  6. Click OK a few times to close the open windows.

Thunderbird is now configured with a second email address you can use when sending email or replying to email. If you have another alias, simply follow the same process above for the others.
