Music purchases on iphone wont transfer to iMac

Help! So I'm trying to transfer purchases from my iPhone 4s to my iMac. I followed the direction suggested by apple support. A transfer was made but with literally nothing I wanted. Just apps and album booklets for a couple albums I purchased. How do I get all the music I bought and downloaded onto my phone? I want to sink my iPod with my iTunes library because I have been having some problems with audio books not transfering from my library to my device. I plan to reset my iPhone when I can ge the purchases transfered over but not til then.

Thanks for any and all advice.

FYI have yet to update to the latest operating system for my phone because it's suggesting I transfer purchases before I do so.
