May 1, 2014 4:22 PM in response to BRGJDOMby MichelPM,We need more info about your iMac. I do not believe that there is a iMac that can have 1.8 GBs of RAM.
To find out info about your system,
Click on the Apple symbol in the upper left of the OS X main menu bar. A drop down menu appears.
Click About this Mac. A smaller popup window appears. This gives you basic info like what version of OS X your iMac is running, the speed of your iMac's CPU and how much RAM is installed.
Click on the button that says More Info. A larger window appears giving you a complete overview of your iMac's hardware specs.
Highlight all of this info and copy/paste all of this into another reply to this post, editing out your iMac's serial number before actually posting the reply.
This will tell us everything about your iMac so we may begin to help with your iMac issues.
Also, How full is your Mac's hard drive?
Locate your iMac's hard drive icon on the OS X desktop. Click the icon once, then use the keyboard key combination Command-I. This will give you additonal info about your iMac's internal hard drive.
Post this info, as well.

May 1, 2014 4:27 PM in response to BRGJDOMby Drew Reece,Buy more RAM & install it, you may need to remove some of the existing modules depending on what you have installed.
It would help to know what model you have, Apple Menu > about this Mac, click More info. It should tell you the model name & model identifer.
Compare that to the ones listed on the 10.9 tech specs page, not all iMacs are supported.

May 1, 2014 4:28 PM in response to BRGJDOMby MichelPM,ALso, if you plan to embark on a major systems upgrade/update, it is prudent to have/create a viable backup of your system and important data either onto a large capacity USB flash drive or external hard drive in case something goes wrong with the install OR you decide you simply do not like the new OS, you can have a backup of your complete previous system to easily revert back to.

May 1, 2014 5:00 PM in response to BRGJDOMby MichelPM,Your Mac only has 1 GB of RAM.
For an upgrade to OS X Mavericks, you need a real world "mimimum". RAM amount of 4 GBs.
Your year and model Mac can take a total of 6 GBs of RAM, max..
I would strongly advise purchasing and installing the full 6 GBs of RAM.
Correct and reliable Mac RAM can be purchased from online Mac RAM sources Crucial memory or OWC (macsales.com).
OWC has the 6 GB RAM kit.
