I synced my iPad with iTunes, it erased all my picture.  Then I restored iPad from earlier back up, and only some pictures came back, and some empty folders came back with no pictures in them. They are inportant pictures to me.  Any way to find my pictures?  they are not in my photo stream.

I do have time machine set up and I back up my ipad to my computer, so is it possilbe to restore my pictures from a time machine back up?

I synced my iPad with iTunes, it erased all my picture.

Photos are stored and backed up on your iPad depending on the way they have been imported to your iPad, see: iCloud: Backup and restore overview

    • Photos you sync from your computer will be removed when you sync again and will be replaced by the curently synced photos. These photos are no included in the backup, when you backup to iTunes or to iCloud.
    • Photos you take on your iPad or save to your Camera Roll will be backed up to iTunes or iCloud, when you backup your iPad.

Then I restored iPad from earlier back up, and only some pictures came back, and some empty folders came back with no pictures in them.

Your missing photos are probably synced photos, since they have been erased by syncing and were not part of the iTunes backup of your iPad.

I do have time machine set up

Synced photos must have come from folders or iPhoto libraries on your computer. Did you sync from iphoto/Aperure or a folder?  Look in your time machine backup for the photo library o the folder you synced with and restore those items.  Do you need help with searching your Time MAchine backup and restoring from Time Machine?

Thanks for explaining this for me.

I dont know how to search in Time machine for a back up that would have my pictures.  I do know the most recent date a back up was made of my iPad that HAD the pictures on it, if that helps.  My photos are not in iPhoto.

Backups of your iPad made in iTunes will only include the camera roll, not your synced photos.

My photos are not in iPhoto.

If you synced the photos to your iPad from a folder, for example the "Pictures" folder, do this:

    • Go to the folder in the Finder and select this folder (or the folder that should contain it).
    • And with this folder selected enter Time Machine. Do you have a Time Machine icon in the menu bar? You can enable it in the Time Machine Preferences.

    • Press "Enter Time Machine" in the drop down menu.
    • Click the Time Line on the right of the Time Tunnel "Star Wars" display to go back to the date, when your folder with the photos was still there. Click the date. If you see the folder, select the folder with the photos and click "Restore" or "Restore to".
