Garageband AIF export ends with 1-2 seconds of silence

I've composed a short tune which is to be looped as a game music score. It's very short, so when the exported AIF file actually ends with a 1-2 seconds of silence, the sound loop.

I've seen this issue mentioned in various places, but those entries are several years old. Is this an old issue re-emerging in the app?

I have set the loop region EXCACTLY, in fact, the tune is not longer than the loop, so why is it that the export just ends this way? It's really a game breaker for me, literally. And it's only for the export, Garageband itself doesn't play (indicate) longer than the actual score.

I must be missing something completely, because I just can't get it to work (zooming, setting the loop interval, setting the score end etc).

Thanks in advance.

Peter, you don't missing anything. Unfortunately, Apple is missed the information that not everybody need to have one to three seconds added to their Project export in case that there are any ringouts at the end (delay, everb, etc).

I think in earlier versions of GB there was an option not to have that extra tail added, but now in GBX 10.0.2 every export has this added tail.

If you stuck with GarageBand, I can think of one workaround how to export without the tail.

  • Export your Song. Let's say your song is 20s long and after you export it, it is 22s.
  • Import the exported audio file back into your Project (or any other Project)
  • Trim the ending of that 22s Audio Region to 20s (or to wherever it should end).
  • Open the Loop Browser and drag that Audio Region over the Loop Browser
  • A Dialog Window opens that lets you set the metadata for the Apple Loop you are about to create.
  • Click Ok and that Audio Region is exported as an Apple Loop
  • In the Finder in your user folder, go to "~/Library/Audio/Apple Loops/ User Loops/ SingelFiles/", thee you find the export of your Audio Region as an Apple Loop audio file.
  • The Apple Loop is still an audio file (just with added metadata that you can ignore). The important thing is that the audio file is exactly the same length as the Audio Region that you exported as an Apple Loop.
  • Voila

As I said, it is a workaround, but at least, it works WITHOUT THE ADDED 2SECOND.

Hope that helps

Edgar's clever workaround will do it, but it is a lot of work and should not be necessary. I strongly suggest to send feedback to Apple about this usuability issue, or even design flaw, the more the merrier. I'd not use the feedback type "feature request"; it is a bug, if a program exports a longer sound file then specified in the documentation andforces the users to jump throug loops to get the exact song lenth they want.

Since your audio clips are small, you could try a simpler work-aroud, if the sound quality is sufficient. The only way right now to share from GarageBand to iTunes without andding silence is sharing by "Ringtone to iTunes". This will create ".m4r" files. After revealing the ringtone in the Finder by ctrl-clicking it in iTunes and using "Reveal", I can copy it rename the file extension to .m4a. These files can ve converted to .aiff in iTunes.

Thanks for the replies, guys! :-)

I ended up installing Audible, in which I simply cut out the end in the exported file. I only need to do this when I use the sound as a loop in my app, so I won't be doing it too many times anyway.

Wonder why Apple just doesn't add a checkbox to the dialog to "minify" the sound on export.

Seems this has been a usability issue for years.
