Hi Annie
Here's the Apple page on Airplay Mirroring.
Basically, it's a way for Macs and iOS devices (iPad, iPhone, etc) to send their screens and sound to an AppleTV on the same wireless network. You connect the AppleTV to your TV using an HDMI cable (they don't come with a cable, so you have to buy one if you don't have a spare), then use its included remote to connect it to your wifi network. (Alternatively, you can cable it to your router with a network cable if it's nearby.)
Once that's done, you would use the Airplay menu on your Mac to mirror to the AppleTV, make sure your TV input is tuned to the correct HDMI port, and you'll see your Mac's desktop mirrored to the TV.
