Supported Disc Not Available - DVD player won't read commercial DVD

I am hoping someone can help...

I am running a PowerBook G4... My DVD player suddenly (after having the computer sent in for repair) won't read certain DVD's. It will read most movie DVDs. However, all of a sudden, it will not read a dual-layer commercial dvd (fantasia to be exact)... I don't know what to do. This is the error message I am getting:

Supported disc not available. The DVD, when inserted, will not mount at all. It does not show up on the desktop nor does a manual start of the DVD player work. I have also tried VLC and get a similar message :no dvd found... After a few minutes of no activity, my dvd player just spits the dvd out and that's it.

It will read the mac os install disc which is a dvd... it will read other dvds... but for some reason or another, will not read this one. I am at a loss. I have searched this board ALL OVER and can't find the answer. I've deleted the com.apple.finder folder in the library/preferences (as suggested in another thread) and that did NOTHING.

I have made sure all my settings are correct on the DVD player... nothing. I NEED HELP PLEASE!!

Anyone..... any suggestions would be greatly appreciated...

Thank you.
Nicole

Hi, Nicole. Welcome to the Discussions.

I am presuming in the following that you had not previously played the Fantasia DVD on the computer in question.

1. Check the packaging / label for a "fine print" message similar to the following:

"This DVD will not work on a Macintosh CD ROM"

Some discs (CDs and DVDs) include copy protection that prevent them from playing on a personal computer's optical drive. This also prevents them from being ripped, and hence makes it difficult to make the content available illegally via P2P services.

Another popular DVD with a related issue is The Matrix. See this page, where that was reported by another person under the heading "DVDFLIX.COM Warning."

2. If none of the above apply, then immediately after the problem occurs, check the ends of these Console logs for clues. Look for messages at the ends of those logs related to DVD Player.

Good luck!

I just had the same problem happen to me on a Powerbook with a commercial DVD. After some Googling, I found a couple recommendations. One was to repair permissions. Another was to make sure the sound was turned on. It sounds odd, but my computer was muted. Once I turned sound back on, I ejected and re-inserted the DVD and everything worked fine. I did not get around to repairing permissions because turning sound on seemed to work.

Hope this helps.

I had the same problem. Turns out I was quitting DVD Player too quickly after it autostarted to set the Region Code.

Quit DVD Player and then Run Repair Permissions in the Disk Utility. Once it is complete, put in a DVD and let it start up. Hopefully you'll be asked to select a Region Code. Click the lock in the bottom left corner of the dialog box, enter your password and select the Region!
