Q: Shared Photostream not downloading all images in Aperture 3.4.5

I'm running Aperture 3.4.5 on an iMac with 10.8.5 installed. I'm having problems with Shared Photostreams, in that the numbers seen in the Aperture library aren't the same as on iOS devices, or in iPhoto libraries.

On the following devices, the numbers of photos in my shared Photostreams (note *shared* - therefore not limited by the usual Photstream nonsense rules) are all identical (numbering anywhere between 10 and 200 images, depending on the stream)

  • My iPhone
  • My iPad
  • Wife's iPhone
  • Wife's iPad
  • Wife's iPhoto installation on OS X 10.9

…yet in Aperture, every Shared Photostream is missing a handful of images, e.g.

  • Only 102 images instead of 148 in one
  • Only 64 instead of 66 in another
  • 32 instead of 38 in another…

It's hugely frustrating and I can't find mention of it anywhere else online (plenty of griping about the regular, 30-day, 1000-images Photostream, but I had thought Shared Photostreams worked more reliably and intuitively than that)!

What I have already tried, to no avail:

  • I have closed & reopened Aperture.
  • I have repaired disk permissions & restarted.
  • I have switched Photostreams off and and back on and let the whole lot re-download again…

Nothing. Still the exact same images are missing.

Anyone else seen this?

Any advice?

Thanks

It may be a problem of incompatible software versions.

The Shared photo Streams changed considerably between OS X 10.8.5 and OS X 10.9.

If the streams have been created on an iOS device with iOS 7 or on your wife's computer with OS X 10.9., these streams ca be open for subscribers to contribute. You will not be able to see the images added by subscribers, if you are not running Aperture 3.5.1  and Mavericks. What is the iOS version on the iPad and iPhone?

Thanks Léonie, this was my fear, and having launched Aperture 3.5.1 on my MacBook Air – which is on Mavericks – all the photos are there in my Shared Photostreams. So you're right.

Sadly it is my iMac that I manage all of my thousands of photos on, and which I have waited the longest to “upgrade” to Mavericks, as it's the most complex (and critical) of my machines.

I guess it's time to bite the bullet and install some updates.

Until you upgrade, create all shared photo streams only on your iMac and upload from your iMac.  And one shared stream on each of the other devices to send the photos to your iMac.

I guess it's time to bite the bullet and install some updates.

If you want full iCloud compatibility, will have to do just that. On the other hand, you'll benefit from consistent software on all platforms.
