Internet Explorer 5.1

I am not able to open the Internet Explorer 5.1 which came with my computer.

I live in Japan and my husband (Japanese) used IE on my computer. I don't know where to begin... That day I was trying to change the preferences and it locked out and my computer froze. So... I restarted the computer, went to IE and it the disc only spun... I tried to upgrade to 5.2 and still it is the same thing. Just before it flipped me off and out, I was trying to reset the start-up to msn.com.

I read and read all of the information and it says that after it comes up you can change the preferences. But, I cannot get that part done... getting the program to come-up to that part again. All I get is the spinning wheel and it spins and spins... the information on the bottom of the screen says it should be getting files, but they do not appear.

Is it possible to get 5.1 again. I've lost the ability to watch digital things on the internet and video feed from friends overseas.

I am using Safari... but IE gave me more flexibility with Japanese text appearing without problems with translating, etc. My husband could use it with ease because the translator worked easier or he was more comfortable with it.

I checked the download section and it does not exist. I realize that it is not supported by Microsoft anymore, but it did make having my MAC have big advantages over my husband's Windows computer.

The biggest disadvantage is that I cannot go back to use some of my older internet files... IE went to older OS and was so convenient.

Please help me...

According to other posts, MSN.com has been set to not open in the Mac version, as Microsoft no longer supports it. [This only makes sense in the mind of Microsoft.

To get around this you need to open a link in Internet explorer and the change the home page to something else or blank.

Hi, fragmore!

Thanks for the information about the www.msn.com url hanging up IE. I just tested this on my rarely-used IE application and sure enough, it "beachballed".

I find it bizarre, though, that it actually hangs the application, rather than simply failing to load the URL. Moreover, I eventually managed to get the url to load through some round-about maneuvering, although it only shows the search portion of the page, which is actually functional! Looks like perhaps MS did a sloppy job in turning it off. You're probably correct about it only making sense in the mind of Microsoft!

Otherwise, IE 5.2.3 does work. (My spouse routinely uses it on the G3.)

Regards,
Gary

I agree. I use Opera. It is fast, fantastic, and free. It does way more than Internet explorer. Actually most browsers do more that IE. In fact some sites will not work with IE 5.2.3 [the last version]. Plus as someone said M/$ does not support IE on the Mac.

How do you open the link to Internet explorer? I cannot find anything on my computer. I have searched my computer for days and days... I cannot seem to find this...

I would be just happy with the search part... then, opening a file... it would still work...

Where is this link?

martian cat,

Fragmore has provided a solution for this, but perhaps I can offer some detailed steps to implement his recommendation:

Create a web link document dragging the URL from the navigation bar on the browser you're now using, to your desktop. The URL for this Discussions page would work just fine, for simplicity.

Insure Internet Explorer is not "running", force-quitting it if necessary.

If Internet Explorer (IE) is in the Dock, drag the web link that you just created onto the IE icon in the Dock and release the mouse to launch the web link with IE. (This will bypass the default IE setting to open the msn.com homepage at launch, which should prevent it from hanging up.) If IE is not in the Dock, then control-click on the weblink, choose "Open with>Other..." and navigate to and select IE to launch the weblink.

If successful so far, then select Explorer>Preferences from the menubar at the top of your Desktop. In the popup window that appears, highlight "Browser Display" from within the "Web Browser" main heading on the left side of this window. On the right side of the window, uncheck the box that states "Automatically go to this Home Page when opening a new window". In the "Address" box immediately above, click the "Use None" button, which will delete the default msn.com homepage URL. Click "OK" at the bottom of the window and then quit IE. Relaunch IE and hopefully, the problem will resolve.

If the problem still remains, then quit/force quit IE and navigate to Home/Library/Caches/MS Internet Cache/IE Cache.waf and drag the IE Cache.waf file to your desktop and redo the steps outlined in the preceding two paragraphs. If this resolves the issue, then drag the IE Cache.waf file from your desktop to the trash, emptying the trash. If it doesn't, drag this waf file back to it's original location, replacing the new one that was since created by IE; then please post back and advise us.

Gary

ps: You will have to do this in each user account, if you have multiple accounts on the Mac.
