No sound from 2006 80GB iPod

No sound from 2006 80GB iPod thru any headphones or when docked to external audio source. I do receive sound when connected to iTunes on my computer. I've 'cooled' the unit to restore sound but this only provides sound temporarily. Is this a repairable issue or is it time for a new iPod?
