Q: Final Cut Express Problem with Capture

I am having the following message come up every few seconds, as I try to capture video from a mini-dv player - 'capture encountered a problem reading the data on your source tape'.  There are some instances where I have managed to capture 15 mins of footage, and others where it displays that message after just a few seconds of capture.  The tapes are new - not sure why there should be a problem.  Is it something about my settings in final cut express?

MacBook Pro, iOS 7.1

    Details are important.

Can you "step by step" tell us your capture procedure?

Does the tape have contiguous time code?

capture video from a mini-dv player

Exactly what mini-dv player?  Is this a camcorder or a miniDV deck?  Regardless, exactly what make & model?

Is this the ONLY firewire device connected to your Mac?   If you have multiple FW devices connected at the same time, it can interfere with video capture.

What version of FCE are you using, and what version of OS X?

Thx - the player I am using is a Sony vx2000 camcorder - it's digital, but not HD, and used mini DV only.

I am connecting only one device via the firewire.

I select the capture option, and play in the playback window, whilst selecting (capture) now in the adjoining window. The funny thing is that the footage has been captured well for some parts of the tape, but not all.

vx200o does have a timecode facility, but I am not sure if it is in use (i.e. whether it would automatically be employed, or whether I may have deselected the option).  In any case, I am not changing the this for parts of the tape that capture well, and those (more significant) parts that do not.

Glad to get some help, as it's footage of my children on holiday.
