Why do some contacts show up in red

I had an iPad before I had an iPhone. I used to send text messages to my whole list of contacts until I started using my iPhone. After I synced the contacts from my iPad to my iPhone I can no longer send messages to those of my contacts without an apple product. When I choose one of their names from contacts, it appears in red, and the message fails. Can I get around this?
